`The book is highly readable and makes extensive use of an actual case study in order to illustrate the approach' - Mark Edwards, Nurtuting Potential `As the creator of Rational Emotive Therapy I have probably read more books dealing with its theory and practice than has anyone else. Of all these books, Windy Dryden and Michael Neenan's is easily one of the best. In a remarkably concise way they have distilled most of the main principles and methods into a small, highly practical and exceptionally readable volume. Any counsellor or therapist will find this book unusually useful and valuable' - Albert Ellis, Albert Ellis Institute Rational Emotive Behavioural Counselling in Action, Third Edition is a brand new edition of this highly popular guide to a much used approach. Combining the theoretical with the practical, the book provides an accessible guide for newcomers to this form of counselling. The book describes the way in which the REB approach helps clients to identify the self-defeating beliefs behind their problems and instead to think, feel and behave differently as a means of achieving valued goals. Fully revised and updated, the book includes an important client case study following therapeutic work with `Paula', which introduces the reader to the strategies and techniques needed at every stage of the process. Here, the reader is given an insight into the nuts and bolts of the therapeutic session, including conversations between client and therapist to illustrate the counselling sequence, how to help the client achieve goals, and how to end the counselling process. Rational Emotive Behavioural Counselling in Action, Third Edition is invaluable for trainees of REB counselling, as well as those who want to incorporate elements of the approach into their own therapeutic work.

The outline of the approach is very clear and is helped by examples in chart form' - Mark Edwards, Nurtuting Potential `A remarkably useful book for the practitioners of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and other kinds of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy!... Definitive and thorough going'- Albert Ellis `Change' is at the heart of counselling and psychotherapy. Clients enter into the therapeutic process in the hope that something in themselves or their situation will be different by the end. Counsellors and Psychotherapists therefore need to understand the nature of change and how best to facilitate it. This is the subject of The Rational Emotive Behavioural Approach to Therapeutic Change. Central to the REBT approach is the view that many of the problems people experience in life are largely determinded by irrational beliefs they hold about themselves, other people and the world. The therapist's role is therefore to help clients identify, challenge and change these unhelpful beliefs. The book describes the cognitive, emotional and behavioural techniques which clients can use to promote psychological change in themselves. It also discusses obstacles to change, which may arise at different points in the therapeutic process and provides strategies for tackling them. Despite its centrality within counselling and psychotherapy, surprisingly little has been written on the subject of change and in a way that is accessible for trainees and practitioners. The Rational Emotive Behavioural Approach to Therapeutic Change will be welcomed both by those specializing in REBT and those trained in other approaches wanting to learn more about the change process in counselling and psychotherapy.

First published as Counselling Individuals: A Rational-Emotive Approach, this book is a clear and systematic guide to using rational-emotive therapy ? RET ? in counselling individuals.
This is the first book devoted to group therapy applications of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). REBT is an active-directive, psychoeducational approach to psychotherapy and as such it is very well suited to being practised with groups. This book shows the range of these applications from regular group therapy to specialised group interventions such as nine hour intensives and Albert Ellis?s famous ? Friday Night Workshop.? Also featured are chapters on a brief, group-based, structured educational approach to teaching unconditional self-acceptance using REBT and the use of the group in training and supervising REBT therapists in training.
Helping clients to develop alternative and more constructive viewpoints to tackle their problems lies at the heart of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). This development is facilitated by the quality of the argument- not to be confused with arguing- that therapists present to their clients. Students as well as experienced practitioners frequently complain that they are ?stuck? when confronted with some clients? self-defeating thoughts and beliefs; they lack or cannot think of good and persuasive arguments to put forward at the time. The purpose of this book is to provide therapists with ideas and arguments they can present to and build on in their discussions with clients. This book represents an addition to the therapist?s ?argumentarium? in the same way that new techniques are added to the therapist?s armamentarium. It will appeal not only to cognitive behavioural practitioners, novice and experienced alike, but also to every therapist who wants to improve their current repertoire of rational arguments to promote client change.
`The text is clear and easy to follow with vivid sessional excerpts that illustrate the theoretical dialogue' - International Review of Psychiatry `The publication proves to contain much instructive and practice-oriented material' - Nursing Standard Stress Counselling is a comprehensive study of the theory and practice of the Rational Emotive Behaviour approach applied to stress counselling and psychotherapy. Albert Ellis pioneered Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), which has since been adopted internationally. This approach enables the clients to embark on a course of effective counselling which has a clear beginning and end. This book discusses techniques and solutions to common problems and also provides guidance on conducting group work. Its comprehensive coverage includes additional material on techniques such as skills training, relaxation methods, hypnosis and biofeedback.
Cognitive therapy (CT), developed by Aaron Beck in the US in the 1960s, is a structured, time-limited, problem-focused and research-based system of psychotherapy which seeks to identify, examine and modify clients' maladaptive thinking found in psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety. The vast literature on CT can appear overwhelming to those interested in practising this therapy. To address this issue, this book serves as an introduction to CT and demonstrates this approach in action.
REBT explores how beliefs affect outlook REBT is a form of psychotherapy that places personal beliefs front and center, inviting the patient to evaluate how their beliefs affects their thoughts and feelings. Essential Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy provides a clear introduction to the concepts and theories of REBT, with technical jargon stripped away to leave an open, engaging exploration of the field. Beginning with the central ABCDE model of emotional disturbance and change, the book delves into assessment, homework, disputing, common obstacles, and working through to give patients and therapists a true picture of how helpful REBT can be.
First published as Counselling Individuals: A Rational-Emotive Approach, this book is a clear and systematic guide to using rational-emotive therapy - RET - in counselling individuals.
Rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT) can, on first impressions, appear to be simple to practice. Its model of emotional disturbance and change, ABCDE, describes a clear and uncluttered approach to therapy. However, the easy progression implied by the model belies the often extremely difficult tasks that the therapist has to execute in each component of the model in order to facilitate this progression. For example, if a client's presenting problem is "my hole life", the therapist has to help the client translate this amorphous problem into a specific one and then link it to goals that are behavioural, measurable and observable. The aim of this book is to demonstrate the complexities of REBT in order to do justice to a system of psychotherapy that is both sophisticated and efficient in tackling emotional disturbance.
This book addresses the manifold difficulties that both client and therapist bring to Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). It offers ways of tackling difficulties that will assist their resolution and thereby help to build a productive and less stressful therapeutic relationship.
