International Trade is vital to the agricultural sector in many countries of the world, especially the United States. International trade allows productive capacity in agriculture to expand without seriously eroding prices, and there is no question that trade will become more critical to many nations in the future. It is surprising, then, that there is no up-to-date text book at the undergraduate or graduate level that provides a complete treatment of the major issues in international agricultural trade. This book is an effort to provide that complete treatment. This book covers all the essential topics for an agricultural trade policy course: gains from trade, agricultural trade policies (of exporters and importers), exchange rates, and multilateral trade negotiations. These have been key elements in agricultural trade classes for decades. These topics are fundamental to understanding how the current trade regime works and which parties benefit and lose as the regime changes. The book also presents concepts on issues that have become more important to a fundamental understanding of agricultural trade: the environment, preferential trade agreements, technical barriers, and flexible exchange rates. Without a clear understanding of these new issues in agricultural trade, one cannot fathom where world agriculture has been and is going. The final four chapters of the book cover company issues that shed light on what helps firms succeed in international markets. This should help instructors who teach in programs that are more agribusiness oriented. The chapters on foreign direct investment and competitiveness take a large-picture view of factors influencing firm behavior and success, while the chapters on export analysis and strategy are oriented toward steps that firms must take in entering and expanding their international markets. The chapters on Europe and China are quite different than the others. The European Union is mentioned throughout the book, so it is important to understand the unique E. U. context. China has been such a large focus for food markets in recent years that it also merits a chapter. One cannot understand world agricultural markets without understanding these important countries. This text is written for those who have had an intermediate microeconomics class because trade issues can be understood best through extensive graphical analysis. The book attempts to make linkages back to everyday life through examples and case studies so that the learning experience is enhanced. Any professor can find numerous current events that support the chapters during a typical semester.

Social science fiction with a sprinkling of humour. Gay to straight or straight to gay? The story was that some scientists in Edinburgh had carried out experiments on mice. When the scientists gave a large dose of insulin to the mice in their food, a number of the mice began to engage in same-sex sexual activity. Would you change your sexual orientation if you could? How does sexuality and sexual orientation actually work? These are the questions facing a group of young people living in the North of England. Along the way, they confront issues of sexual role, family breakdown, social isolation and what's going on in John's fridge - you name it.

The nature of Higher Education in the UK has changed over the last three decades. Academics can no longer be said to carry out their work in 'ivory towers', as increasing government intervention and a growing 'target culture' has changed the way they work. Increasingly universities have transformed from 'communities of scholars' to 'workplaces'. The organization and administration of universities has seen a corresponding prevalence of ideas and strategies drawn from the 'New Public Management' ideology in response, promoting a more 'business-focussed' approach in the management of public services. This book examines the issues that academics now face as a result of these changes, both as the 'knowledge-workers' managed, and the 'manager-academic'. It draws on a detailed study of academics holding management roles ranging from Head of Department to Vice Chancellor in sixteen UK universities, exploring their career histories and trajectories, and providing extensive accounts of their values, practices, relationships with others, and their training and development as managers. Drawing on debates around 'New Public Management', knowledge management, and knowledge workers, the wider implications of these themes for policy innovation and strategy in HE and the public sector more generally are considered, developing a critical response to recent approaches to managing public services, and practical suggestions for improvements which could be made to the training and support of senior and middle managers in universities. The book will be of interest to all teaching, researching, or managing in Higher Education, Education policy-makers, and academics and researchers concerned with Public Management, Knowledge Management, or Higher Education.

Mitchell Roberts' father was a drunk. His fathers' father was a drunk. His mothers' father was a drunk. In the family tradition Mitch was a drunk. Mitchell, however, did something none of the others did. He found recovery. Much to his disappointment he's still knee deep in dysfunction. His ex-wife wants to remarry, and he's not sure he's not really in love with his ex-girl friend. The hole he's dug with twenty-eight years of drinking is not easily escaped. What starts out as a very co-dependent relationship becomes real love, as he learns to form a true partnership with another human being. Mitchell has a lot of challenges to face in recovery, and so far he's making headway, but when life takes something from him that he's not prepared to lose, reality hits him like a freight train. Why go on? Does the answer lie in the gun laying on the little chapel floor? The one brought in by a drunk priest. What is the point to life anyway?

The Landscape of Britain has a uniquely rich historical diversity. In this book explains the processes at work in the evolution of the landscape, pointing out examples of surviving evidence from the past. The landscape of late twentieth-century Britain is the end product of some ten thousand years of human effort directed not only towards satisfying basic physical needs for food and shelter, but also towards expressing profound spiritual and intellectual aspirations, whether by means of burial mounds or churches, schools or monasteries. The author shows how each generation makes its own individual contribution without being able entirely to erase those of its predecessors, however remote or distant in time.

This book provides a reassessment of the significance of Max Weber's work for the current debates about the institutional and organizational dynamics of modernity. It re-evaluates Weber's sociology of bureaucracy and his general account of the trajectory of modernity with reference to the strategic social structures that dominated the emergence and development of modern society. Included here are detailed analyses of contemporary issues such as the collapse of communism, fordism, coporatism and traditionalism in both Western and Eastern societies. All of the contributors are scholars of international repute. They undertake analyses of Weber's texts and his broader intellectual inheritance to reassert the centrality of Weberian sociology for our understanding of the moral, political and organizational dilemmas of late modernity. These analyses challenge orthodox readings of Weber as the prophet of the iron cage. Instead they offer interpretations of his work which emphasize the reality of modernity as a dual process with the potential for both disarticulation of rational structures and deeper colonization of daily life. Not only is this book essential reading for Weber specialists but it also provides compelling analyses of modernity and the inherently contingent nature of global cultural and stuctural transformation. Martin Albrow, Roehampton Institute; Stewart Clegg, University of Western Sydney; David Chalcraft, Oxford Brookes University; John Eldridge, Glasgow University; Larry J

Buckinghamshire is one of the smaller English counties, yet one of the most varied, attractive and interesting historically. It falls into two quite distinct and separate halves, on either side of the chalk scarp of the Chilterns. To the north is a rural countryside of rounded hills, clay vales and brooks, with ancient towns such as Buckingham and Olney. The south is a series of steep sided, often dry valleys and ridges on the dip of the Chilterns sloping down towards London and the Thames Valley, with old towns such as Amersham, Beaconsfield and Eton.
