Michael Walker's Laurel Canyon presents the inside story of the once hottest rock and roll neighborhood in LA. In the late sixties and early seventies, an impromptu collection of musicians colonized a eucalyptus-scented canyon deep in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and melded folk, rock, and savvy American pop into a sound that conquered the world as thoroughly as the songs of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had before them. Thirty years later, the music made in Laurel Canyon continues to pour from radios, iPods, and concert stages around the world. During the canyon's golden era, the musicians who lived and worked there scored dozens of landmark hits, from "California Dreamin'" to "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" to "It's Too Late," selling tens of millions of records and resetting the thermostat of pop culture. In Laurel Canyon, veteran journalist Michael Walker tells the inside story of this unprecedented gathering of some of the baby boomer's leading musical lights--including Joni Mitchell; Jim Morrison; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; John Mayall; the Mamas and the Papas; Carole King; the Eagles; and Frank Zappa, to name just a few--who turned Los Angeles into the music capital of the world and forever changed the way popular music is recorded, marketed, and consumed.

Sherlock Holmes and the Great War presents a vivid and richly detailed chronicle of Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson's experiences during World War I. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of the early twentieth century, the narrative weaves together the harrowing realities of battlefield medicine, the shadowy world of espionage, and the challenges of global conflict. Throughout the book, Dr. Watson's medical service on the Western Front highlights both the immense human cost of war and the resilience demanded of those serving in its midst. Holmes, meanwhile, operates as a master of intelligence and deduction, tackling covert operations from London to the front lines, countering enemy espionage and sabotage, and engaging in high-stakes pursuits such as the hunt for the enigmatic spy Mata Hari. The partnership between Holmes and Watson is a constant thread, balancing Watson's compassion and duty with Holmes's analytical prowess. Together, they navigate not only the visible dangers of warfare but also the hidden threats posed by enemy agents, blending the cerebral challenge of detective work with the visceral reality of conflict. Key themes explored include duty and compassion, loyalty and friendship, the moral complexities of wartime service, and the hope that persists even in the darkest times. The story culminates in the armistice celebrations, underscoring the triumph of resilience and the enduring quest for justice and peace. Ultimately, Sherlock Holmes and the Great War offers readers both a thrilling account of espionage and a heartfelt tribute to the courage and humanity found in the crucible of war.
