THE Voyagers: A Day in the Life of a Miner
Many ex-coalminers will find in this novel a powerful reminder of their own life 'down the pit' as it skilfully recreates a typical day in the life of Luke, a British coalface worker in the 1970's. Although the main action takes place over a single day and just one shift, the author delves back into Luke's trainee days in the 1950's. But it's not just old miners who will benefit from this story as the author carefully explains the various operations involved in bringing coal out from deep in the ground up to the surface and all the various specialists forming this tremendous team effort, from the shotfirers and rippers to the deputies, belt-end attendants and lamp-room men, electricians and mechanics, the tackle runners and the haulage men, the grease monkeys and the workers at the coal face itself, struggling to maintain productivity in the face of never-ending management demands.

Berlin 1919, a civil war is raging between communists and nationalists. In the midst of this turmoil and violence a newborn baby is abandoned on the doorsteps of a convent. This is the story of that foundling, and of her quest to find an identity, a search which takes the child, the girl and the woman through a Germany of upheaval, fascism and war. It is a world in which belonging to the 'right' racial group can become a matter of life and death. In a life full of danger and adventure, Margareta moves in National Socialist and Communist circles, ever alive to the swirling currents of events in The Third Reich and yet swept along in spite of herself through marriage, lovers and friendships to imprisonment by the Gestapo.

When Charles I was executed, his son Charles II made it his role to search out retribution, producing the biggest manhunt Britain had ever seen, one that would span Europe and America and would last for thirty years. Men who had once been among the most powerful figures in England ended up on the scaffold, on the run, or in fear of the assassin's bullet. History has painted the regicides and their supporters as fanatical Puritans, but among them were remarkable men, including John Milton and Oliver Cromwell. Don Jordan and Michael Walsh bring these remarkable figures and this astonishing story vividly to life an engrossing, bloody tale of plots, spies, betrayal, fear and ambition.
The People v. the Democratic Party

The People v. the Democratic Party

Since the day Aaron Burr, the sitting vice president of the United States, shot and killed Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers, the Democratic Party has been at war with America. With a history that includes murder, treason, slavery, segregation, sedition, bribery, and systemic vote theft, it can argued that the Democrats are, at root, the anti-American party. In this incendiary Broadside -- a heartfelt j'accuse -- Michael Walsh traces the illicit and immoral history of the Democrats from Burr and the founding of the quintessential big-city political machine, Tammany Hall, to the "by any means necessary," Saul Alinsky-inspired presidency of Barack Obama and his Windy City cronies. The prosecutorial argument: The Democrats, in essence, are nothing less than a criminal organization masquerading as a political party.
A Dictionary of Popes

A Dictionary of Popes

This fascinating dictionary gives concise accounts of every officially recognized pope in history, from St Peter to Pope Benedict XVI, as well as all of their irregularly elected rivals, the so-called antipopes. Each pope and antipope's entry covers his family and social background and pre-papal career as well as his activities in office. Also, an appendix provides a detailed discussion and analysis of the tradition that there has been a female pope. This new edition reflects the very latest in papal research and contains additional information in the further reading sections of each entry, making the book an even more useful starting place for research into specific pontiffs. The entries are arranged chronologically making this a continuous history of the papacy over almost 2,000 years. It reveals how, for much of that history, spiritual and temporal power have been inextricably mingled in the person of the pope. A fascinating read for students of theology and history, as well as the general reader with an interest in Christian history.
White Cargo

The forgotten story of the thousands of white Britons who lived and died in bondage in Britain’s American colonies In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, more than 300,000 white people were shipped to America as slaves. Urchins were swept up from London’s streets to labor in the tobacco fields, where life expectancy was no more than two years. Brothels were raided to provide “breeders” for Virginia. Hopeful migrants were duped into signing as indentured servants, unaware they would become personal property who could be bought, sold, and even gambled away. Transported convicts were paraded for sale like livestock. Drawing on letters crying for help, diaries, and court and government archives, Don Jordan and Michael Walsh demonstrate that the brutalities usually associated with black slavery alone were perpetrated on whites throughout British rule. The trade ended with American independence, but the British still tried to sell convicts in their former colonies, which prompted one of the most audacious plots in Anglo-American history. This is a saga of exploration and cruelty spanning 170 years that has been submerged under the overwhelming memory of black slavery. White Cargo brings the brutal, uncomfortable story to the surface.
