The frontiers of the Roman empire together form the largest monument of one of the world’s greatest states. They stretch for some 7,500km through 20 countries which encircle the Mediterranean Sea. The remains of these frontiers have been studied by visitors and later by archaeologists for several centuries. Many of the inscriptions and sculpture, weapons, pottery and artefacts created and used by the soldiers and civilians who lived on the frontier can be seen in museums. Equally evocative of the lost might of Rome are the physical remains of the frontiers themselves. The aim of this series of books is not only to inform the interested visitor about the history of the frontiers but to act as a guidebook as well. The Roman military remains of Egypt are remarkable in their variety and in their state of preservation. They deserve to be better known. They include forts, quarries under the authority of the army and whose materials were used in the monumental buildings of Rome, as well as the roads which crossed the desert landscape and brought the Mediterranean into con¬tact with the Indian Ocean. It is hoped that each reader of this book will enjoy learning more about the remarkable Roman inheritance of Egypt. The full text is presented side-by-side dual-language in English and French.

Les fouilles d'Oedenburg (Biesheim, Kunheim, Haut-Rhin, France) s'inscrivent dans le cadre d'un projet de recherche trinational mene depuis 1998 par l'Ecole pratique des Hautes Etudes (En Sorbonne, Paris) avec les l'Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat Freiburg (D) et l'Universitat Basel (CH). Ce vaste site archeologique installe au bord du Rhin comprend plusieurs ensembles importants: deux camps militaires successifs de l'epoque julio-claudienne, une agglomeration civile qui s'est developpee au premier siecle de notre ere et a perdure bien au-dela de la fin de l'Antiquite, une serie de grands batiments du quatrieme siecle de notre ere, dont une forteresse de l'epoque de Valentinien. Ce premier volume de la publication finale s'attache a analyser l'architecture et la signification historique du camp romain installe sous Tibere a la frontiere de l'Empire avant d'etre rebati sous Claude, puis abandonne au moment de la conquete des Champs Decumates. Die Fundstatte Oedenburg, die zwischen Biesheim und Kunsheim im Elsass am Rheinufer liegt, umfasst mehrere Teilbereiche. Zum einen zwei zeitlich aufeinander folgende Militarlager, die der julisch-claudischen Zeit zugeordnet werden, sowie eine Siedlung aus dem ersten Jahrhundert n. Chr., die noch bis in das Fruhe Mittelalter hinein Bestand hatte. Ausserdem wurde bei den Arbeiten eine Anzahl grosser Gebaude aus der Zeit des Kaisers Valentinian (ca. 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) entdeckt, die in ihrer Anlage vergleichbar mit einer ahnlichen Festung in der Nahe von Trier sind - wenn auch in ihrer Ausdehnung ungleich grosser. Die Archaologen vermuten in der Anlage ein Beispiel fur eine Entwicklung vom reinen Militarlager zu einem kaiserlichen Herrschaftssitz in friedlicheren Zeiten. Die dreibandige Publikation widmet sich den Funden und ihrer Bedeutung, der Architektur der Lager und der Siedlung.
