An insurgency in Nigeria by the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has left thousands dead, shaken Africa's biggest country and worried the world. Yet it remains a mysterious - almost unknowable - organisation. rough exhaustive on-the-ground reporting, Mike Smith takes readers inside the conflict and provides the first in-depth account of the violence and unrest. He traces Boko Haram from its beginnings as a small Islamist sect in Nigeria's remote north-east, led by a baby-faced but charismatic preacher, to its transformation into a hydra-headed entity, deploying suicide bombers and abducting schoolgirls. Much of the book is told through the eyes of Nigerians who have found themselves caught between frightening insurgents and security forces accused of horrifying brutality. It includes the voices of a forgotten police officer left paralysed by an attack, women whose husbands have been murdered and a sword-wielding vigilante using charms to fend of insurgent bullets. It journeys through the sleaze and corruption that has robbed Africa's biggest oil producer of its potential, making it such fertile ground for extremism. Along the way it questions whether there can be any end to the violence and the ways in which this might be achieved. Interspersed with history, this book delves into the roots of this unholy war being waged by a virtually unknown organisation, which is set to shape the destiny of Africa's biggest economy and most populous state - and perhaps affect the future of Africa.

In the Western World the average life span is approximately 80 years old. However, when people get to that age they are usually hit with a multitude of health problems and encounter frailties both physically and mentally. They experience this state of "old age" unfortunately in most cases mainly because of the nutritional and lifestyle habits they have practice throughout their lives. They've succumbed to the propaganda of having a Western diet, Western lifestyle and have been conditioned by the media that 80 years of age is old. However, there are people who are located in the remotest parts of the world who consider 80 years old to be a young age They are living past the age of 100 years old in strong health, are active and alert and are in full possession of their mental faculties. In fact, with these people, being active and alert centenarians with a keen enjoyment of life are the norm. What are their secrets and the keys to their longevity and fountain of youth? Well, it all begins with their practice of healthy habits which include diet, exercise and attitude. In his book entitled Healthy Habits: How to Live 100 Plus Years and Avoid Dying Before Your Time author Mike Smith explores and examines the diet and lifestyles of the various groups of people throughout the world who have for centuries practiced longevity principles that have enabled them to consistently live past 100 years of age. The people who fit this criteria and will be explored and examined are the people of Bama who are located in the West Central Guangxi Province of South China, the Hunzas of Pakistan, the Okinawans of Japan, the people from the small Greek island of Symi, the Abkhazians of Russia, the Campodimele people of Central Italy, the Vilcabamba Indians of Ecuador and the Titikaka Indians of Peru. You will be shown how to effectively incorporate the healthy habits of these centenarians in your daily life so you too can enjoy the fruits of living a long, healthy, active and prosperous life.
This is the first book-length study of the archaeology of Australia's deserts, one of the world's major habitats and the largest block of drylands in the southern hemisphere. Over the last few decades, a wealth of new environmental and archaeological data about this fascinating region has become available. Drawing on a wide range of sources, The Archaeology of Australia's Deserts explores the late Pleistocene settlement of Australia's deserts, the formation of distinctive desert societies, and the origins and development of the hunter-gatherer societies documented in the classic nineteenth-century ethnographies of Spencer and Gillen. Written by one of Australia's leading desert archaeologists, the book interweaves a lively history of research with archaeological data in a masterly survey of the field and a profoundly interdisciplinary study that forces archaeology into conversations with history and anthropology, economy and ecology, and geography and Earth sciences.

In military terminology, the line of departure is the spot at which a soldier crosses from friendly-held territory into unsecured ground, leaving safety behind to pursue his duty. For Major Bill Slade, a second-rate army officer and inveterate drinker, he must journey across the line of departure to hunt for his enemies while fighting his own demons. In 1991, Slade is stationed in Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Storm. He journeys into the modern battlefield, led by a weak and incompetent officer-a personal tormentor whose clashes with Slade will end when one of them is dead. Only Slade knows of the true dangers awaiting him and the soldiers he leads-that one of the best leaders and fighters in the U. S. Army is now fighting for Saddam and against Slade and his comrades-in-arms. As the army begins the ground invasion, Slade journeys into his past where he faces the memories of an evil so raw that it drives him into near madness, and destroys the one person Slade loves. Slade relives a confrontation with a malevolent figure straight from a hideous tale of ancient horror, a scarring event that haunts Slade as he goes to war. He journeys into the heart of a conspiracy whose magnitude staggers Slade's imagination. Slade becomes the prey as assassins come at him from the most unlikely directions. He finds treachery and deceit all around him. He journeys into his enemies' hands and faces a terrorist whose beauty is her most deadly weapon. Like Backazimuth, the sequel, Across the Line of Departure is an engrossing military mystery in the spirit of Tom Clancy and Harold Coyle, a realistically told thriller that draws readers deep into the mind of a complex protagonist whose unconventional code of honor sets him on a dangerous path to vengeance, from which there can be no turning back.
Chapel-en-le-Frith was founded in 1225, when foresters in the Royal Forest of the Peak were allowed to build a chapel in the forest. Buildings which have survived to the present time tell of a market town that developed into an important stopping place on trans-Pennine routes and played a major role in the history of transport. In the gritstone hills that surround the town, there is a remarkable concentration of ancient halls, as well as a wealth of unspoilt hamlets. As well as highlighting how changes in lifestyle have impacted on the appearance of Chapel, the photographs show that the older parts of the town and the surrounding hamlets have changed surprisingly little. Customs and traditions have also continued into the present century, thanks to the determination of the townspeople to preserve long-established clubs and societies. The story of Chapel-en-le-Frith is about continuity, as well as change.
