Orejas de ellos, the things who listen, whispered the superstitious fishermen when the strange occurrences began off the Philippine coast. An alien intelligence gorged at the bottom of the Luzon Deep and made its plans. Radar expert Terry Holt and the crew of the Experance had to devise a weapon against the horrifying creatures which threatened mankind with extinction. Morale: A Story of the War of 1941-43 By Murray Leinster

Doctor to the Stars is a collection of three stories by Murray Leinster. The stories are about a medical doctor who travels between planets solving problems. Calhoun, the hero, is smart and able use his knowledge of medicine to figure out what is going on and what needs to be done. The stories written in the 1950s, and so they are a little dated. In "The Grandfathers' War" Calhoun tries to stop the ultimate parenting problem when the parents have decided they have to go to war with their children, to save their children. With "Med Ship Man" Calhoun is able to salvage a con man's attempt to buy land cheap when the con man almost destroys a colony. Tallien Three is a bit of a horror story where humans seem to be turning into a creature like a zombie. The stories are pleasant and well told. They move along and are entertaining. They aren't great, but I enjoyed them. If you want to enjoy average good science fiction from the 1950s, then check out "Doctor to the Stars._We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. There was no life on the asteroid, but the miles of rock-hewn corridors through which the earth party wandered left no doubt about the purpose of the asteroid. It was a mighty fortress, stocked with weapons of destruction beyond man's power to understand. And yet there was no life here, nor had there been for untold centuries. What race had built this stronghold? What unimaginable power were they defending against? Why was it abandoned? There was no answer, all was dead. But-not quite all. For in a room above the tomb-like fortress a powerful transmitter beamed its birdlike, fluting sounds toward earth. Near it, on a huge star-map of the universe, with light-years measured by inches, ten tiny red sparks were moving, crawling inexorably toward the center. Moving, at many times the speed of light, with the acquired mass of suns ... moving, on a course that would pass through the solar system. The unknown aliens would not even see our sun explode from the force of their passing, would not even notice the tiny speck called Earth as it died....

A terrifying darkness engulfed the sky while on the horizon a fire flood consumed the mountain The ship swayed again. Flying creatures darted back and forth above the tree tops. Miles away, insensate violence reigned. Clouds of dust and smoke shot miles into the air, half a mountainside glowed white hot, and there was the sound of long-continued thunder as the ground shook and quivered... The runaway sapcecraft's rockets bellowed as it lifter. Hovering for an instant, it surged skyward. The ship vanished into emptiness. Jed Cochrane stared helplessly at the spot where it had stood. Babs gasped suddenly. She realized the situation in which she and Cochrane had been left. William Fitzgerald Jenkins is an obscure name in literary circles, and it certainly doesn't seem appropriate for an author who wrote thousands of short stories in science fiction, alternate fantasy, and other types of "weird" fiction genres. Perhaps that's why Jenkins chose a more eccentric pen name, Murray Leinster, to publish over 1,500 short stories and articles, 14 movie scripts, and hundreds of radio scripts and television plays. Leinster is not as well known as the 20th century's biggest names in the genre, like Lovecraft or Hitchcock, but he left a lasting mark on science-fiction. Leinster is still credited as the first to write stories about parallel universes, which had an influence on subsequent writers' stories, including Isaac Asimov's "The End of Eternity." Incredibly, Leinster's short story "First Contact "was even the subject of a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures' "Star Trek: First Contact "movie, with Leinster's heirs claiming copyright infringement. The courts threw out the heirs' suit, noting that the phrase "first contact" had become so common in science-fiction circles that it could no longer be considered protected. Perhaps that's the most fitting tribute of all to Leinster.

They were broadcasts from nowhere - sinister emanations flooding in from space - smashing any receiver that picked them up. What possible defence could Earth devise against science such as this?

"I don't know how I'm going to say it so you'll understand, but time is just as much a dimension as length and breadth." He frowned. He wanted to talk about Wells's Time Machine but he knew that'd be no use - these folks didn't read that sort of thing. "If the earth had settled down, we'd have been lower. If it had settled to one side, we'd have been moved one way or another, but as it's settled back in the Fourth Dimension, we're going back in time." "Then -" "We're in a runaway skyscraper, bound for some time back before the discovery of America "
