The garden had been deserted for a quarter of a century. Only a few lone blossoms managed to rise above the weeds throughout several summers. Frail ghosts of dead flowers were released from milkweed and thistles at night. As always, Miss Evelina Grey felt the icy, iron hand clutching her heart mercilessly as she awakened. She resembled some ethereal, disembodied kind of grief in her frailty. Anthony Dexter took his time getting ready and kept having the nagging sensation that something terrible had happened. Finally, he recalled that he had seen a ghost on the grounds of Evelina Grey's old home shortly before dark. He was silently surprised by a spirit carrying something he had forgotten long ago. Ralph Dexter was accused of the long-forgotten atrocities the village's young boys committed. Miss Mehitable brought the record up to the point at which he departed Rushton for college after receiving entrance preparation from his father. Nothing could be done since he was unable to lash out at his own father with his hand. Ralph had no idea that his father had observed his expression. Now he understood why Miss Evelina had declined to provide him with the man's name. When she begged him to leave her, he was also aware of the heinous temptation she was battling.

The story centers on Rose, her widowed aunt Madame Francesca Bernard, and her little niece Isabel, whose lives are affected by the appearance of Colonel Kent, an old acquaintance, and neighbor, and his adult son Allison. The Crosby twins, who are unusual and exuberant young people that put society at naught, and an eccentric doctor who specializes in the impossible are two more individuals that significantly influence their lives. The reader is unsure of the historical setting or even the decade the story is set in due to the sparse "wide-scope" descriptions, but this makes it easier to comprehend the story's main point since it is all about how the characters' hearts and lives fit together in the small spaces of their town, their garden, their friendships, and their daily lives.

Myrtle Reed's Edwardian romance book Lavender and Old Lace was released in September of that same year. It tells the tale of a few amazing ladies, each of whom has experienced love in a different way. Miss Jane Hathaway is a wise leader in a little coastal town. Despite the fact that the sister passed away without her forgiveness, she has long since moved over the scandal caused by her elder sister's elopement. She accepts Ruth Thorne's offer to visit after receiving a letter from the 34-year-old niece, but she departs before Ruth gets there. In an old trunk, Ruth discovers some souvenirs and treasures. Because of an eye condition, Mr. Winfield is unable to read or write. Ruth accepts Mr. Winfield's proposal, however, there is no specified date. The wedding of Hepsey and Joe is announced right away. Using Ruth's honeymoon as a pretext, Aunt Jane dismisses Hepsey when she learns of her husband's wandering eye. With all of the excitement, it's hard to picture the shock when Aunt Jane, a married lady, returns Ruth stays with Miss Ainslie while she modifies her will to leave everything to Ruth and Carl. Both, particularly Carl, assert that they would like to have her. They discuss a dream Carl had about his father, but she refuses to think it is anything more than a coincidence.

The Book of Clever Beasts (Studies in Unnatural History)
After the tragical deaths of Tom-Tom and Upsidaisi, my life was strangely lonely. No one who has not experienced it can realise the subtle, almost spiritual attachment which may exist between man and his kindred of the wild. The Squirrels barked at each other, but there was no bark for me except on the oak tree at my cabin door. The little Birds sang, but not for me. Whenever I approached a thicket where the woodland chorus was in rehearsal, trying to learn the Bird-calls which are printed in the books, there was a spontaneous silence which seemed to possess a positive rather than a negative quality. -Excerpt from the book

The Myrtle Reed Cook Book This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING
