The House of the Seven Gables: A Romance is a Gothic novel written beginning in mid-1850 by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne and first published in April 1851. The novel follows a New family and their ancestral home. Hawthorne explores themes of guilt, retribution, and atonement, and colors the tale with suggestions of the supernatural and witchcraft. The setting for the book was inspired by the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, a gabled house in Salem, Massachusetts, belonging to Hawthorne's cousin Susanna Ingersoll, as well as ancestors of Hawthorne who had played a part in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The book was well received upon publication and has been adapted several times to film and television. Unique Element: Historical Context / Commentaries

"There could not be a more perfect work of the American imagination."-D. H. LawrenceIn colonial New England, beautiful, young Hester Pryne bears a child although her husband is presumed lost at sea. She refuses to name the father and is condemned to wear a scarlet "A" and live as an outcast. As she transforms the badge of shame into a symbol of freedom, Hawthorne's dramatic masterpiece envisions an authentic relation between the sexes-and a different way of imagining love, sin, and redemption-that can form the basis for America's radical project of a true democracy.

Andrew Barger, a leading voice in the Gothic literature space, searched forgotten magazines, newspapers, journals and scholarly articles, to uncover the best witch stories written in the English language over one hundred years after the horrific events of the Salem Witch Trials. They had a lasting effect in both the U. S. and Europe, as these publications reflect from the many authors who penned witch stories in this genre. Andrew includes in his introduction to the collection, the actual text from the Salem Witch Trials. These classic witch stories that have been uncovered are unmatched. One is a humorous tale that stands, in the grand Irish tradition of great storytelling, shoulder to shoulder with Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1819) and Charles Dickens's "The Goblins Who Stole a Sexton" (1836), as that rare combination of humor and horror that is so difficult to find. It is published for the first time in over a century and a half. What Andrew calls "America's first great witch short story" is also published for the first time in nearly two hundred years.
