"Mother," said little Pearl, "the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. . .. It will not flee from me, for I wear nothing on my bosom yet " "Nor ever will, my child, I hope," said Hester. "And why not, mother?" asked Pearl, stopping short. . .. "Will it not come of its own accord, when I am a woman grown?" -From the book A young woman, Hester Prynne, is driven among the masses from the town prison with her infant daughter, Pearl, in her arms and the scarlet letter 'A' on her breast. Hester is being disciplined for adultery. She is not willing to reveal the identity of her lover. The scarlet letter, and the public shaming, is her punishment. Woman and her decisions, on how she wants to lead her life have been the subject of great speculation. This again forms the crux of 'The Scarlet Letter' by Nathaniel Hawthorne that brings forth Hester's ordeal when she is accused of adultery. The narrator has chosen to discuss the agony of women in the society about 200 years ago and how they always had to bow to the rules of the patriarchal society. The story is series of events that speak of love, trust and revenge woven around characters that make it an intriguing read. Nathaniel does a wonderful job by subtly questioning the reader, that nothing really has changed, has it?

We dream in our waking moments, and walk in our sleep. Set in the mid-17th century in New England, The Scarlet Letter follows married Hester Prynne after she conceives a daughter through an affair. Societal standards of puritan New England force her to wear a scarlet "A" on her clothes as a constant reminder to her and everyone else of her past infidelity. Through the life of Hester and of her child, they both struggle through the overwhelming stigma behind Hester's adultery, and despite the mounting pressure, she refuses to name the father of her child. Hawthorne paints an eye opening story of acceptance, shame, guilt, and fierce social ostracism surrounding one woman and the burden she bears in her life.

The Scarlet Letter is set in 17th-century Puritan Boston, Massachusetts, during the years 1642 to 1649. It tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. Throughout the book, Hawthorne explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt. The Scarlet Letter is a work of fiction in a historical setting, and is considered to be Hawthorne's best work. Hawthorne describes a space between materialism and "dreaminess" that he calls "a neutral territory, somewhere between the real world and fairy-land, where the Actual and the Imaginary may meet, and each imbues itself with nature of the other." This combination of "dreaminess" and realism gave Hawthorne space to explore major themes. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.
“A perfect work of the American imagination.”-D. H Lawrence “The Scarlet Letter is so terrible in its pictures of diseased human nature as to produce most questionable delights. The reader’s interest never flags for a moment…Hawthorne, when you have studied him, will be very precious to you. He will have plunged you into melancholy, he will have overshadowed you with black forebodings, he will almost have crushed you with imaginary sorrows; but he will have enabled you to feel yourself an inch taller during the process.”-Anthony Trollope Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is a razor-sharp novel set in a seventeen-century puritan community. The book examines the contradictions of good and evil, what is apparent and what is hidden, and the power of redemption. After Hester Prynne, the protagonist of The Scarlet Letter, has a child out of wedlock, she is branded with the scarlet letter “A” on her dress. Shunned in her community as she refused to identify the father of her child, Hester lives with in a small cottage with her daughter, Pearl. Roger Chillingworth, an elderly physician, joins the community, and unbeknownst to all except for Hester, he is her long-departed husband, who was presumed to be dead. In his absence, Hester had an affair and subsequently gave birth to a child. Covertly aiming for revenge on the father of the child, Chillingworth descends on Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, the young minister who he suspects in the illicit affair. Within the remarkable character of Hester, Hawthorne examines female independence and the complexities of sin. With a surprising emotional pitch and powerful insights into the human condition, this is one of America’s greatest novels. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Scarlet Letter is both modern and readable.

"The dangers of a concentration of all power in the general government of a confederacy so vast as ours are too obvious to be disregarded. You have a right, therefore, to expect your agents in every department to regard strictly the limits imposed upon them by the Constitution of the United States. The great scheme of our constitutional liberty rests upon a proper distribution of power between the State and Federal authorities, and experience has shown that the harmony and happiness of our people must depend upon a just discrimination between the separate rights and responsibilities of the States and your common rights and obligations under the General Government; and here, in my opinion, are the considerations which should form the true basis of future concord in regard to the questions which have most seriously disturbed public tranquillity. If the Federal Government will confine itself to the exercise of powers clearly granted by the Constitution, it can hardly happen that its action upon any question should endanger the institutions of the States or interfere with their right to manage matters strictly domestic according to the will of their own people" (Excerpt taken from Pierce's Presidential Inaugural Address). In his inaugural address, Franklin Pierce spoke much of the constitution, and the limits placed upon the Federal Government. And thus he was able to preserve the Union for the time being from the Civil War that would follow soon after. But what kind of a man was he? Well, in this book you will experience the richness of Hawthorne's writing as he presents to you the democrat candidate for the presidency of 1852, just as he did to the people of that time so long ago. This book was written by Hawthorne prior to the election of 1852, as a portrayal for the American people to see who Franklin Pierce was. And it is in this book you will be introduced to a man who was in every respect admired, cherished, and beneficial to the people of his time.
