The newly revised Pevsner guide covering the very best of Staffordshire’s buildings and architectural features This expanded and updated guide to the architecture of Staffordshire completes the revised Buildings of England series. The county’s highlights include the cathedral city of Lichfield, the surprisingly little-known county town of Stafford, and outstanding country houses from the Tudor, Stuart, and Georgian centuries, such as Wootton Lodge, Weston Park, and Shugborough Hall with its internationally important garden buildings. A rich and distinctive industrial history is reflected in the pottery buildings of Stoke-on-Trent and the breweries of Burton-upon-Trent. Among the smaller towns, Leek was the centre of a thriving Arts and Crafts community. Staffordshire’s best timber-framed houses rival those of Cheshire, and its building stones reflect the varied geology of a landscape that extends to the wild country of the Peak District and Cannock Chase. The county was also a stronghold of the Gothic Revival, represented by such masterpieces as Pugin’s St Giles, Cheadle, and Bodley & Garner’s memorial church at Hoar Cross. Each city, town, or village is treated in a detailed gazetteer. A general introduction provides a historical and artistic overview. Also included are plentiful maps and plans, over 120 new colour photographs, full indexes, and an illustrated glossary. The result is both an indispensable reference work and an invaluable guide.

The latest revised volume in the Pevsner Architectural Guides, covering Birmingham and the towns and settlements of the Black Country This fully revised account of the buildings of the City of Birmingham, its suburbs and outskirts, and the adjacent Black Country explores an area rich in Victorian and Edwardian architecture. A comprehensive guide to County Durham, one of Northern England’s most fascinating and architecturally diverse counties This volume surveys one of northern England’s most varied and rewarding counties. County Durham, flanked by the rivers Tyne and Tees, boasts Durham Cathedral, England’s most impressive Norman church, located unforgettably alongside Durham Castle on the cliff tops above the River Wear. Exceptionally rich in Anglo-Saxon churches and sculpture, County Durham features the legacy of the brilliant culture of the age of Bede. Many of Durham’s extraordinary castles remain inhabited, with palatial interiors from the Georgian and Victorian periods. In addition to fine gentry houses and stone-built market towns, the county also reveals the legacy of historic industries, including early railway buildings, collieries and lead mines. During the 20th century, a new generation of innovative buildings for culture and education at Gateshead and Sunderland emerged. Specially commissioned photography and maps complement an exceptional guide to this architecturally rich northern English county.

A richly illustrated exploration of the architecture of one of England’s hidden gems—Nottinghamshire This volume offers an enlightening introduction to the memorable and surprising buildings of one of England’s least-known counties. Located in the center of England, Nottinghamshire boasts a rich history, including its storied connection to the legendary Robin Hood. Nottinghamshire features the exquisite medieval churches of Newark, Worksop Priory, and Southwell Minster. Country houses offer a fascinating range of architectural styles: Wollaton Hall shows Elizabethan architecture at its most fantastic, and Bunny Hall demonstrates the English Baroque at its most bizarre. Newstead Abbey, home of the poet Lord Byron, incorporates the haunting monastic ruins from a former Augustinian abbey. The city of Nottingham teems with Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings, and is enlivened by a local tradition of first-rate Modernist architecture. With new color photography, maps, and illustrations, this volume is the ideal guide to one of England’s most fascinating counties.

This fully revised and up-to-date guide to the architecture of Hertfordshire is an eye-opening introduction to the wealth of fine buildings that can be found right on London’s doorstep. Hertfordshire is one of the smallest English counties, largely rural in character. Its buildings range from remains of the Roman city of Verulamium to the medieval abbey at St. Albans and the 17th-century Hatfield House. Numerous timber-framed buildings and Georgian houses are found in the small towns whose preservation was aided by the early 20th-century creation of the Garden Cities at Letchworth and Welwyn, as well as Stevenage New Town, built after the Second World War. Pretty villages set in the county’s rolling farmland feature churches that have towers crowned with spires known as Hertfordshire spikes, while commuter suburbs are rich in housing from homely Arts and Crafts to radical Modernism. With expanded entries and new color photography, this is an essential work of reference for visitors and residents alike.

This volume, a companion to Hampshire: Winchester and the North, covers the county’s southern half, from the woodland and heath of the New Forest to the cities along the Solent, and from remote Saxon churches to Modernist seaside villas. The original text has been fully revised to include new research and 130 specially commissioned color photographs. The guide explores major ecclesiastical monuments at Romsey, the Bishop of Winchester’s palace at Bishops Waltham, and the remains of the great post-Dissolution houses at Beaulieu and Titchfield. At Southampton is one of England’s best preserved medieval town walls, while at Portsmouth the structures of the 18th- and 19th-century Royal Navy dockyard are among the most important of their kind. Amid all this beauty are traces of conflict, from the Roman fort at Portchester, to the coastal castles of Henry VIII’s rule, to the relics of the Normandy invasions of 1944.
