Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike, Liversedge and Gomersal, plus a number of villages, make up an area known as the Spen Valley. This book, with over 200 illustrations, mostly from the author's collection of postcards, covers part of the region's history. In the early 1900s, the region was fortunate in having several expert photographers who recorded everyday scenes. Much of their output appeard on postcards. Using glass plates a darkroom and sheets of photographic paper with the word 'postcard' on the back, their handiwork was purchased either for a means of communication of placing in an album. The work of local Edwardian photographers, including J. Hodgson of Cleckheaton, features strongly in the book. The images over an area whose woollen-related industries can be traced back to domestic sheep rearing on the green and wooded hillsides. The towns and townships of the Spen Valley reached a heyday in the first decades of the twentieth century. With photographs of mills, mines, railways, busy streets and special events, the contents of this volume are a valuable social comment on a relatively recent period of history. The pictures are accompanied by the authors' well-researched text.

In 1967, when Batley's fortunes were declining, James Corrigan gave the town its famous Variety Club, which presented the top names in entertainment. After a decade, the club was in decline. Batley has become accustomed to peaks and troughs of prosperity. The rages-to-riches town, situated in the heart of the West Riding's Heavy Woollen District, had few major industries to fall back on when the mills closed, except perhaps, for Fox's Biscuits. The 1980s saw the rejuvenation of Carlinghow Mills and Cheapside Mills, the latter becoming the flagship of Skopos. In 1993, Kirklees Council obtained a share of Government City Chalenge money for Batley. It was allocated to job creation, roads and housing. A significant sum was used on business premises, including refurbishment of old mill properties. Many of the solidly-built mills and warehouses have a handsomeness which is worth preserving. A Batley without them and the fine Market Place, a by-product of the mil era, is unthinkable. This book contains 200 excellent old images from Batley's heyday, selected by the author from his own extensive archive of picture postcards and ephemera of the area.

A century after opening in 1889, Dewsbury Town Hall became the focal point of a new Market Place pedestrianisation scheme. The splendid building symbolises Dewsbury’s great days as centre of the West Riding’s Heavy Woollen District. Vast quantities of rags were once brought to the town for sorting, auctioning and recycling into inexpensive heavy woollen goods. On these activities was Dewsbury’s fame and fortune based. From a settlement of people living in the Market Place and Westgate areas, the population of Dewsbury increased six-fold between 1800 and 1900. Road connections to Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield and Huddersfield were improved; development of Calder based navigations gave access to trading centres such as Hull and Manchester; railway companies established excellent freight and passenger facilities. Although many of Dewsbury’s mills have disappeared, much fine Victorian architecture remains. Norman Ellis, author of a dozen other local history books, has used over 200 illustrations from his unique collection of Dewsbury postcards and ephemera to produce this book. It explains how the town rose to prominence, and chronicles especially the story during the twentieth century.
