In accordance with Article 102 of the Charter and the relevant General Assembly Resolutions, every treaty and international agreement registered or filed and recorded with the Secretariat since 1946 is published in the United Nations Treaty Series. At present, the collection includes about 30,000 treaties reproduced in their authentic languages, together with translations into English and French, as necessary. The Treaty Series, where treaties are published in the chronological order of registration, also provides details about their subsequent history (i.e., participation in a treaty, reservations, amendments, termination, etc.). Comprehensive Indices covering 50-volume-lots are published separately.

It includes national legislation, bilateral agreements and multilateral treaties, as well as, information on decisions of the International Court of Justice, arbitral tribunals and other dispute settlement procedures.

Esta cuestión se ha puesto de relieve, en particular, al tratar de hacer frente a los impactos del cambio climático en los océanos. Para conseguir ese objetivo se han elaborado varios enfoques basados en los ecosistemas, inspirados en el concepto de ordenación costera integrada. Un planteamiento basado en el ecosistema es fundamentalmente una forma avanzada de ordenación integrada de las costas y los océanos, con mayor insistencia en las metas y objetivos del ecosistema y sus resultados. El presente manual trata ante todo de ofrecer a los participantes los conocimientos y actitudes necesarios para elaborar y aplicar un enfoque ecosistémico en su propio contexto nacional.

El presente manual tiene por objeto facilitar el proceso de negociación al que tienen que recurrir los Estados con costas adyacentes o situadas frente a frente en el caso de reivindicaciones que se superpongan. No debe considerarse un estudio analítico ni un libro de texto exhaustivo sobre todas las cuestiones relativas a la delimitación de fronteras marítimas, incluida la solución de controversias respecto a tales fronteras. El manual incluye información de orden jurídico, técnico y práctico que se considera esencial para negociar la delimitación de fronteras marítimas entre los Estados ribereños. También contiene información relativa a la solución pacífica de controversias en caso de que las negociaciones no tengan éxito y los Estados interesados deseen valerse del mecanismo de solución de controversias establecido en la Convención de 1982.

This handbook is a useful tool for facilitating the negotiating process to which countries with adjacent or opposite coasts can resort to in case of overlapping claims. Its area of coverage includes: maritime zones subject to boundary delimitation; norms and rules applicable to maritime boundary delimitation; factors exerting an influence on maritime boundary delimitation; methods applicable to maritime boundary delimitation; practical aspects of the negotiations; negotiating and drafting the agreement; and settlement of disputes.
