This book presents the first synthesis of his extensive oeuvre in English. Dahrendorf's political commitment was driven largely by his desire to maximize life chances, thus contributing to the further development of liberalism. In the tradition of Karl Popper, his work in all areas was aimed at defending the open society, and he saw conflicts, if they were settled, as being suitable in principle for contributing to social progress. This book provides insights into the various methodological and theoretical aspects and critiques of Ralf Dahrendorf's work, as well as his reflections on the position of sociology in the system of sciences and in relation to political practice. After a low-threshold introduction, this book offers an orientation on various theories of social conflict and their potential for understanding conflicts in order to be able to deal with them constructively. Classic theories of social conflict are presented briefly first. Based on this, two selected theoretical perspectives on social conflict, the conflict theory approaches of Ralf Dahrendorf and Niklas Luhmann, are further developed. Dahrendorf's conflict theory is combined with a differentiated variant of his life chances approach. Luhmann's conflict theory is expanded to include a theoretical discussion of escalation dynamics and de-escalation archetypes. Using a case study on landscape conflicts in the context of the energy transition, the authors illustrate the potential of the theories discussed to explain the emergence, stabilization and escalation of such conflicts. The book will end with a focus on current discussions about the significance of feelings in social conflicts and how to deal with them.

‚Landschaft‘ gehört zu einem auf vielfältige Weise alltagsweltlich verankerten Begriff und Konzept. Nachdem die Landschaftsgeographie in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts noch den Kern des Faches der deutschsprachigen Geographie ausmachte, geriet sie in den 1960er Jahren im Zuge einer Ausrichtung auf quantitative ‚Raum‘-Forschungsansätze in den Hintergrund und in Verruf. Seit den 2000er Jahren wird sich ‚Landschaft‘ nun aus konstruktivistischen Perspektiven erneut mit anderer Ausrichtung angenähert. Nicht mehr die Suche nach der ‚Essenz‘ von ‚Landschaft‘ steht im Mittelpunkt des Interesses, sondern die Frage, wie diese sozial hergestellt wird. In dieser Publikation werden Meilensteine des skizzierten Perspektivwechsels beleuchtet und diese als Propädeutik einer neopragmatistischen Landschaftsgeographie verstanden. Deren Beitrag liegt in einer anti-essentialistischen, pluralitätssensiblen wie auch problemorientierten Redeskription der Landschaftsforschung.

Wissenschaftliches Wissen prägt moderne Gesellschaften in nahezu allen Lebensbereichen. Zugleich ist Wissenschaft selbst in soziale, historische, politische und räumliche Kontexte eingebunden. Dieses Lehrbuch bietet einen einführenden und zugleich integrativen Überblick über zentrale Fragen der Wissenschaftstheorie, der Wissens- und Wissenschaftssoziologie wie auch der Raumtheorie. Behandelt werden die Fragen, wie wissenschaftliches Wissen erzeugt wird, wie Theorien entstehen, welche Geltungsansprüche sie erheben und wie sich unterschiedliche theoretische Perspektiven auf Raum, Gesellschaft und Wissenschaft zueinander in Beziehung setzen lassen. Die zweite, überarbeitete und erweiterte Auflage entwickelt den Neopragmatismus als metatheoretischen Rahmen des Lehrbuchs. Theorien werden dabei nicht als Abbilder einer unabhängig gegebenen Wirklichkeit verstanden. Verstanden werden sie vielmehr als Werkzeuge, mit denen Welt beschrieben, geordnet und problembezogen bearbeitet werden kann. Aus dieser Perspektive werden klassische Positionen der Wissenschaftstheorie, sozialkonstruktivistische Ansätze, wissenschaftsgeschichtliche und wissenssoziologische Zugänge sowie unterschiedliche Raumverständnisse relationiert und hinsichtlich ihrer jeweiligen Reichweite, Anschlussfähigkeit und Tauglichkeit hin befragt. Das Lehrbuch richtet sich insbesondere an Studierende der Geographie, Raum- und Planungswissenschaften, Landschaftsarchitektur sowie benachbarter sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Fächer. Zugleich bietet es Forschenden und Lehrenden eine Orientierung in einem zunehmend ausdifferenzierten theoretischen Feld. Neu aufgenommen und vertieft wurden in der zweiten Auflage unter anderem Fragen der gesellschaftlichen Legitimation von Wissenschaft, der Bedeutung Künstlicher Intelligenz in wissenschaftlicher Praxis sowie eine neopragmatistische Redeskription von „Doing Geography“.

Landscape is not simply there to be perceived. People learn to interpret physical spaces as landscapes through socially shared patterns of meaning, valuation, and communication. This first volume of two introduces the foundations of landscape research from a social constructivist perspective. It reconstructs the historical development of landscape concepts, develops an analytical framework for understanding landscape, and traces the changing physical bases of appropriated landscape. It also presents major concepts and theories of landscape, ranging from essentialist and positivist perspectives to constructivist and more-than-representational approaches. By bringing together conceptual history, analytical structure, and theoretical pluralism, the volume offers a systematic introduction to the ways landscapes are constituted, interpreted, and debated. In this sense, it also provides a conceptual foundation for neopragmatist landscape research. Volume II explores current issues in landscape research and demonstrates how landscape theory can inform practical engagement.

Dieses Buch führt den Neopragmatismus als innovativen theoretischen Rahmen für Sozial- und Raumwissenschaften ein. Jenseits essenzialistischer Wahrheitsansprüche und stabiler Subjekt-Objekt-Dichotomien bewegt sich der hier präsentierte Ansatz bewusst jenseits klassischer Theoriegegensätze. Im Zentrum des Buches steht eine Operationalisierung von Richard Rortys Vokabulartheorie und panrelationalistischem Ansatz für die Sozial- und Raumwissenschaften. Welt als ein dynamisches, instabiles Netz von Relationen verstanden, das mittels Vokabularen sprachlich umrissen wird. Diese Perspektive wird durch die Einbindung von Diskurstheorien, Konflikttheorien sowie der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie weiter differenziert. Mit der Verbindung von Sprachtheorie, Metatheorie und Panrelationalismus werden Raumkategorien wie Landschaft, Region oder Stadt, als kontingente und konfliktbehaftete Konstruktionen begriffen. In Fallbeispielen zur Biographiekonstruktion und zu Landschaftskonflikten wird der entwickelte Ansatz einer Prüfung unterzogen. Darin wird die Komplexität sozialer und räumlicher Phänomene mittels des entwickelten Ansatzes erfasst und für eine gesellschaftliche Problembefassung fruchtbar gemacht. Das Buch richtet sich an Personen, deren Interesse an theoretischen Abstraktionen und zugleich praktisch anschlussfähigen Perspektiven auf Gesellschaft und Raum gerichtet ist. Landscape appears stable and consistent. At least, this is a common perception of landscape. This view ignores the contingency of landscape, which is evident in the past and future as well as in the present and not just in relation to the physical spaces into which 'landscape' is projected but also in relation to social constructions and individual experience. The contingency of landscape becomes clear in inverse landscapes, which illustrate states and processes that are not impossible, but also not requisite. In this way, inverse landscapes form a tool for operationalizing the neopragmatist idea of expanding contingency. The concept of inverse landscape is subjected to criticism in various ways, from internal criticism to metatheoretical criticism to life-related pragmatic criticism. This critique is performed from an interdisciplinary perspective. The aim of this book is to further develop the concept, both regarding a more differentiated understanding of the contingency of landscape and also concerning the question of how it can help to solve practical problems in the context of 'landscape'.

This book fills a gap in the market by taking an introductory look at cartographic representations as multimedia constructs, from theory to critique to neopragmatist perspectives and in practice. It offers an interdisciplinary analysis from the fields of media and communication studies as well as geography and cartography to examine how cartographic representations as constructions of multimedia shape our options for appropriating space and possessing space-generating qualities. Examples from current social discourses such as the COVID-19 pandemic, debates on climate change, and sustainability plus the war in Ukraine show how multimedia cartographic representations are part of the communicative negotiation processes in public media spheres. The book offers insights into the theoretical foundations, historical developments, and practical applications of cartography, with a particular focus on the critical reflection of power structures and interests. It is aimed at students, researchers, and teachers, thereby inviting each to understand maps not only as technical artifacts but also as complex multimedia constructions.

Landschaft erscheint stabil und beständig. So lautet zumindest eine verbreitete Auffassung von Landschaft. Diese Auffassung ignoriert die Kontingenz von Landschaft, die sich nicht allein in Vergangenheit und Zukunft, sondern auch in der Gegenwart zeigt, nicht nur in Bezug auf materielle Räume, in die ‚Landschaft‘ hineinprojiziert wird, sondern auch in Bezug auf soziale Konstruktionen und individuelles Erleben. Die Kontingenz von Landschaft wird in inversen Landschaften deutlich, die nicht unmögliche, aber auch nicht notwendige Zustände und Prozesse verdeutlichen. Damit bilden inverse Landschaften ein Werkzeug der Operationalisierung der neopragmatistischen Idee der Erweiterung von Kontingenz. Das Konzept der inversen Landschaften wird auf unterschiedlichen Weisen der Kritik unterzogen, etwa von der Binnenkritik über die meta-theoretische Kritik bis hin zur lebenspragmatischen Kritik. Diese Kritik erfolgt aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive. Ziel dieser Kritik ist eine Weiterentwicklung des Konzeptes, sowohl in Bezug auf ein differenzierteres Verständnis für die Kontingenz von Landschaft, aber auch der Frage, wie es helfen kann, praktische Probleme im Kontext ‚Landschaft‘ zu lösen.
