First of a Series of Six Stories First published in Pictorial Review, May 1916] When a seed-merchant of cautious disposition and an eye to the main chance receives from an eminent firm of jam-manufacturers an extremely large order for clover-seed, his emotions are mixed. Joy may be said to predominate, but with the joy comes also uncertainty. Are these people, he asks himself, proposing to set up as farmers of a large scale, or do they merely want the seed to give verisimilitude to their otherwise bald and unconvincing raspberry jam? On the solution of this problem depends the important matter of price, for, obviously, you can charge a fraudulent jam disseminator in a manner which an honest farmer would resent. This was the problem which was furrowing the brow of Mr. Julian Fineberg, of Bury St. Edwards, one sunny morning when Roland Bleke knocked at his door; and such was its difficulty that only at the nineteenth knock did Mr. Fineberg raise his head. "Come in-that dashed woodpecker out there " he shouted, for it was his habit to express himself with a generous strength towards the junior members of his staff. The young man who entered looked exactly like a second clerk in a provincial seed-merchant's office-which, strangely enough, he chanced to be. His chief characteristic was an intense ordinariness. He was a young man; and when you had said that of him you had said everything. There was nothing which you would have noticed about him, except the fact that there was nothing to notice. His age was twenty-two and his name was Roland Bleke.

"I say, laddie " said Archie. "Sir?" replied the desk-clerk alertly. All the employes of the Hotel Cosmopolis were alert. It was one of the things on which Mr. Daniel Brewster, the proprietor, insisted. And as he was always wandering about the lobby of the hotel keeping a personal eye on affairs, it was never safe to relax. "I want to see the manager." "Is there anything I could do, sir?" Archie looked at him doubtfully. "Well, as a matter of fact, my dear old desk-clerk," he said, "I want to kick up a fearful row, and it hardly seems fair to lug you into it. Why you, I mean to say? The blighter whose head I want on a charger is the bally manager."

This edition reproduces the stories as they appeared in the Strand magazine in 1921 and 1922. It is the only edition that lets today's readers see the original illustrations by A. Wallace Mills and experience these stories in the same way their earliest readers did. The twelve stories in this book are all about Wodehouse's most beloved characters, Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. The Inimitable Jeeves was Wodehouse's second book that included stories about Jeeves and the first that was made up exclusively of Jeeves stories. (In the first, My Man Jeeves, Jeeves was a character in only half the stories.) The stories collected in the book were published in the Strand magazine in Britain and in the Saturday Evening Post and Cosmopolitan in the United States. Some of the stories were turned into two stories when they were collected in book form, and this book includes a key identifying the magazine stories that were broken up in this way. Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, poems, and lyrics for musical comedies. He was immensely successful with the public and was also admired by writers such as Rudyard Kipling, Hilaire Belloc, and Evelyn Waugh. Today, he is remembered mainly for his writings about Jeeves and about Blandings Castle. About this SeriesHeritage Facsimile Editions are reproductions of classic works of literature as they first appeared in illustrated magazines. In the days before electronic media, illustrated magazines were one of the most common forms of popular entertainment, filled with stories and serialized novels. The illustrations were a key part of the reader's experience. There was a delay before these stories and novels were published in book form, to give people an incentive to subscribe to the magazines. The books generally kept down costs by omitting the illustrations. This series publishes the books using facsimiles of the magazine articles, including the original illustrations.

"Good Lord, Jeeves Is there anything you don't know?""I could not say, sir." That, in brief, is the essence of the relationship between aristocrat Bertie Wooster and his dryly superior valet, Jeeves. Originally published in The Strand magazine from 1918 to 1922 and later collected as The Inimitable Jeeves, these ten tales by comedic master P. G. Wodehouse abound in sparkling wit." Scoring off Jeeves" recounts a lunch with Aunt Agatha ("A pretty frightful ordeal ... Practically the nearest thing to being disemboweled."), who insists that Bertie propose to Honaria Glossop ("simply nothing more nor less than a pot of poison"), necessitating Jeeves' rescue of the perennial bachelor ("and according to my nearest and dearest, practically a half-witted bachelor at that"). Other stories include "The Delayed Exit of Claude and Eustace," featuring Bertie's frolicsome cousins ("as innocuous as a pair of sprightly young tarantulas"); "Aunt Agatha Takes the Count," involving our hero's formidable relative and her intrusion upon his vacation in the south of France; and "Comrade Bingo," in which Bertie's school chum masquerades as a Bolshevist and Jeeves comes very near to being rattled.

Something New by P. G. Wodehouse. The sunshine of a fair Spring morning fell graciously on London town. Out in Piccadilly its heartening warmth seemed to infuse into traffic and pedestrians alike a novel jauntiness, so that bus drivers jested and even the lips of chauffeurs uncurled into not unkindly smiles. Policemen whistled at their posts
