P. T. Barnum

Den legendariske nöjesproducenten P. T. Barnum började sin bana som bedragare. Som ung i 1830-talets New York tjänade han pengar på bluffar som »George Washingtons 161-åriga amma« och spred falska nyheter för att få mer klirr i kassan. Med åldern blev han seriösare och försökte delvis kompensera för forna synder, bland annat genom att skänka stora summor till välgörenhet. Hans liv var som en berg-och-dalbana: han växte upp på en blygsam bondgård, blev stormrik på sina verksamheter, förlorade nästan allt på grund av dåliga investeringar – och vann sedan tillbaka allt med råge. När han dog 1891 efterlämnade han en förmögenhet på tio miljoner dollar, en på den tiden enorm summa som placerade honom i USA:s ekonomiska toppskikt. 1880 gav Barnum ut denna lilla bok som summerade allt han lärt sig under sitt långa affärsliv. Den är lättsam i tonen men innehåller råd som är lika nyttiga nu som de var då. Den lär oss bland annat att skilja på sann och falsk sparsamhet, vilka egenskaper vi måste odla för att lyckas och hur vi väcker köplust. Konsten att tjäna pengar är inget mysterium för Barnum utan mest en fråga om inställning: »Vill man verkligen bli ekonomiskt fri är det bara att bestämma sig för det och vidta de rätta stegen, så klarar man det lätt.«
