Is it possible for today's pastor to provide competent counseling to the members of his flock? Should counseling be left to psychologists, psychotherapists, and secular counselors? What should be the primary source of information for the pastor who attempts to counsel? Should the Bible be used in the counseling room? These questions and more are answered by Dr. Paige Patterson in this book. God's Word is sufficient Pastors must reclaim their role of offering Biblical Counsel to the members of their flock. Every pastor should read this volume. Every believer should read this book as well. Now is the time for the church to recapture its role of Biblical Counseling.

No book since the apostles has more positively impacted the means and methods of the church's mission to reach the entire world with the gospel than William Carey's An Enquiry. First published in 1792, Carey struck a match that set fire to English Particular Baptists not only to organize their first global missions society, with Carey as its first commissioned missionary, but also sparked a continual flame of newly formed mission societies that expanded global missions for the next 100 years so far and wide, it led the eminent Yale church historian, Kenneth Scott Latourette, to proclaim the era "The Great Century" of Christian missions.

A grave danger lurks behind the seemingly friendly term of social justice. Contemporary social justice endangers our country, families, and, most importantly, the gospel of Jesus Christ. Social justice is, in many ways, a euphemism for cultural Marxism. What has made its threat even more treacherous is that cultural Marxism ideas have made their way into conservative evangelicalism and the Southern Baptist Convention. As long as Christians are led to believe that social justice is the same as God's justice, Christians will be facilitators of godless Marxism. They will be instruments of corrupting the gospel of Jesus Christ. This book biblically critiques social justice and prepares Christians to stand for God's impartial justice, truth, love, and the gospel.

"God's Amazing Grace: Reconciling Four Centuries of African American Marriages and Families is an insightful study that will be welcomed by thoughtful practitioners and all who ponder the African American family's complexity. Readers familiar with the deep, rich reservoir of African American family literature will recognize many of the black scholars referenced in this work. Readers unfamiliar with these sources will be grateful to discover them and the effective use of disparate literature. "This work will become a different kind of guide for studying American history through the lens of the African American family. Underneath all the research is the search for answers to the compelling questions: Is there a correlation between slave owners' denial to slaves, God's design for the family, and the familial chaos that has plagued African American families for more than a hundred fifty years? And if there is connection, what is it? "The author has brought something new to a familiar topic of discussion--the Bible. The unique moral compass that steered this study is solidly anchored in the bedrock of holy scripture. In this work, the history and sociology of African American marriages are examined in light of the questions asked by Holy Scripture. In so doing, Dr. Turner skillfully attempts to help readers make sense of the story of black families in America. May this book mark the beginning to a new reality for African American families" (Dr. Willie Peterson, senior executive advisor, adjunct professor of Pastoral Ministries, Dallas Theological Seminary).

The book of Revelation is a love letter to the church. Yet most view it as troubling, and many misunderstand what the Lord is trying to tell us. Didn t the Jews in Jesus day have some of the same problems? Early biblical prophecy, already fulfilled, helps define what is about to happen. Are some bad, scary events looming on the horizon? Yes, and you ll learn about that. But even more important, you ll see what Scripture has to say about you as the overcomer. The puzzles of Revelation are coming together, and we who love and serve the Lord are seeing that the best is yet to come. Revelation: The Best is Yet to Come provides a simple running commentary and interpretive guide for the beginner. Our hope is that laypersons and preachers not familiar with the book of Revelation will be encouraged to do a more in-depth study. The material takes an unashamed pretribulation, premillennial position within a traditional dispensational framework."
Urban Impact

Urban Impact

Half of the population of the world lives in cities of one million or more. If we don't reach and disciple from these masses, our future missionary and pastoral force will be diminished. The book Urban Impact is a trumpet call to muster our forces but also deals with the philosophy and practical principles that make any ministry in the city successful. Brandishing a practical writing style coupled with real life experiences, John Thompson helps the reader understand the problems, burdens, joys, and powerful impact cities have on the rest of society. Helping the city pastor or missionary develop an effective ministry, Thompson elaborates on seven critical principles necessary for an effective urban ministry. Following this discussion the book turns to two of the leading challenges of great cities. The first being how to reach the disenfranchised--those from minority groups, people who have substance abuse problems, and the homeless, to name but a few. The second challenge deals with one of the greatest foundational problems in our cities and in all of society: the plight of the Absent Father. Other chapters address urban discipleship as the most effective approach to promote life transformation, planting churches in the difficult urban environment, and a topic rarely discussed in urban books, raising a family in the city. ""I can tell you that the one chapter on the absent father, the greatest problem in our society, would be worth the purchase price of the book and every second of the valuable time that it takes to read it. If I could only read one book this year on evangelism and especially how to reach the teeming masses of people in the inner cities of our world, it would be this book by John Thompson. This will change not only your life but the lives of thousands of others also."" --Paige Patterson President Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary ""There are practitioners who are not veterans. There are veterans who are no longer practitioners. There is nothing like hearing from a veteran who is still a practitioner. John Thompson writes from the field. This work helps meet the urgent need for urban ministry perspective and material that is rooted in scripture, tested in practice, and based in the local. This volume is the voice of a man who lives the life and knows what he is talking about."" --Charles Lyons Senior Pastor Armitage Baptist Church, Chicago ""Inner-city ministries may at times be risky and unnerving. But they are never dull, nor without spiritual rewards. John Thompson has given us a book rich in personal narrative, biblical teaching, practical wisdom, and urgent challenge. I recommend that students who feel even the slightest tug to consider urban ministry read this book, let its message grip you, and ask God if the inner city is where he wants you to serve him."" --Roger S. Greenway Professor of World Missiology Calvin Theological Seminary John Thompson has lived and served in the inner city of Chicago for twenty-nine years. He is the Pastor of Discipleship at Armitage Baptist Church, a multicultural church representing thirty-seven different ethnic groups from the inner city of Chicago. He has taught in many Bible colleges and seminaries on urban topics.

The island of Crete was a tough place. It was to the Roman world what the urban ghettos and favelas of today's great cities are to our neighborhoods. Paul needed a young missionary with energy, zeal, wisdom, determination, faith, and courage to embark on a mission to the fabled but fateful home of the Minotaur and the mythological birthplace of Zeus. Charged with the task of finding elders for the churches and grounding these churches in the faith of the Apostles was the unenviable task given to a driven, passionate young preacher named Titus. The instruction of the missionary-theologian Paul to one of his sons in the ministry beckons the reader to follow into the Labyrinth of Crete and see that in both the first century and in the contemporary urban setting, God's redemptive grace is adequate to change both life and eternity. Paige Patterson is President and Professor of Theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He previously served as President of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina; President of Criswell College in Dallas, Texas; and he was twice elected President of the Southern Baptist Convention. His passion is expressed as scholarship on fire with and manifested in missions and evangelism.
