This book explores the life of Sebastian Tengnagel, the imperial librarian who established Vienna's first major collection of Arabic, Turkish, Persian, and Hebrew manuscripts. By examining his correspondence and interactions with European scholars and Ottoman subjects, it sheds light on his pursuit of knowledge. Highlighting the significance of his manuscript collection and his political and religious positions, this book provides fresh insights into seventeenth-century Vienna as a center for the acquisition and dissemination of Oriental scholarship.

English summary: At the end of the 16th century, the Dutch scholar Hugo Blotius tried to establish the foundations of a Hapsburg Imperial Library in Vienna. He left an impressive archive of letters, notes, and catalogues at his death. This book analyzes Blotius's archive to understand the doubts and frustrations towards his relationship with the court and the emperor, making it possible to understand the reorganization of European knowledge in a world whose borders were expanding a century after the discovery of movable type printing. Italian description: Alla fine del XVI secolo, l'erudito olandese Hugo Blotius tento di realizzare a Vienna il progetto di un Museo del genere umano e di una Biblioteca imperiale universale. Assumendo per un trentennio la carica di bibliotecario di corte diede invece vita al primo nucleo della biblioteca imperiale asburgica. Qui ha lasciato alla sua morte un imponente archivio, fatto anzitutto di lettere, appunti, note e cataloghi. E questo insieme di carte ad accompagnare il lettore attraverso le stanze di una biblioteca in formazione, di una citta e di un impero in una fase ancora poco nota della loro storia. Come tradurre un progetto universale nella costituzione di un'istituzione che seppur imperiale era ospitata nelle anguste stanze di un convento francescano? E come farlo in una citta costantemente minacciata dall'invasione turca e dallo scoppio delle guerre di religione? Per quale tipo di pubblico concepire questa organizzazione? I dubbi e le frustrazioni del bibliotecario nel suo rapporto con la corte e l'imperatore consentono di ricomporre una fase di gestazione nella riorganizzazione del sapere europeo, ad un secolo dalla scoperta della stampa a caratteri mobili e dall'allargamento dei confini del mondo.

Geschriebene Zeitungen waren ein im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert in Europa weit verbreitetes Nachrichtenmedium. Im Vergleich zu ihren gedruckten Pendants sind sie gerade in der deutschsprachigen Forschung bislang jedoch kaum untersucht worden. Ausgehend von der Erschliessung einer der prominentesten Sammlungen solcher Zeitungen, der in Wien uberlieferten sog. Fuggerzeitungen, wird hier erstmals das Phanomen regional und thematisch in ubergreifende Zusammenhange gestellt. Dabei geht es zum einen darum, was eine geschriebene Zeitung ist und wie sich deutsche Zeitung und italienischer Avviso unterscheiden. Es werden zum anderen aber auch Verbindungen zwischen Zeitungssammlungen im Alten Reich und in Italien untersucht und damit Konturen eines Informationsnetzwerkes am Beginn der europaischen Presseentwicklung gezeichnet.
