Planning with children for better communities

Planning with children for better communities

Following the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), the case for children's involvement in decision-making processes has been championed by pressure groups and voluntary organisations. Planning with children for better communities argues that there is now a need to transfer these ideas and experiences to mainstream services of local authorities, regeneration agencies and other organisations. In addition to clarifying why the issue of children's participation should be prioritised, the authors use examples and case studies from a variety of professions and disciplines in order to explain different methods which can be used to support participation. The book: analyses children's and young people's contemporary place in local communities; locates debates about children's and young people's participation in local communities within government social and economic policy; captures children's and young people's views and experiences of community life. The authors conclude that there should be greater recognition of the right of children to determine significant decisions affecting them - children have a clear entitlement to involvement in key decisions which influence their lives. Planning with children for better communities is important reading for local authority planners and policy makers, project workers, community development workers, children's rights officers, youth workers, play workers and students of social and community work and politics. It should also be read by those people in the voluntary and community sector concerned with children's issues relating to planning and community development.

Paul Henderson left school at the age of 15 and worked his way up from apprentice to become managing director of Britain's third-largest machine-tool manufacturer, Matrix Churchill. For almost 20 years he provided information, gathered on his many trips to Eastern Bloc countries, to a series of MI6 handlers. In September 1989, he showed Ministry of Defence officials, on a vast wall map, precisely where Saddam Hussein had built the factories that were turning out his missiles, artillery and munitions. He knew where they were because he had been inside many of them. In the Gulf War British and American aircraft used Henderson's information to help pinpoint targets for the bombs that destroyed the military power of Iraq. In return for his bravery and patriotism Henderson was betrayed by the British Government and forced to fight for his freedom from the dock at the Old Bailey. In November 1992 he won his case. "The Unlikely Spy" is both the autobiography of an ordinary man and a potentially explosive document filled with revelations about the secret workings of the intelligence services and the Government itself.

'a host of eminently sensible practical suggestions...the strength of this book is both that it explores with some rigour the meaning of 'rural', of 'community' and of 'development' and that it has clearly in view the practical needs of the lone, inexperienced field worker...' Community Development Journal Vol. 28 No. 2, 1993P '...deserves to become an essential reference book for all those with an interest in rural community work' Adage Pural communities are facing increasing and contrasting problems, with high levels of unemployment or conflict arising from suburbanisation and the arrival of newcomers. This book provides a strategic framework for dealing with these issues, with an innovatory model for planning and practising rural community work. It is relevant to work in all types of areas and for a wide range of agencies, identifying key management and evaluating tasks. Important connections are made between existing knowledge and worker's own experiences. Concluding with a review of policies this is an invaluable guide for rural community work students and professionals.
