भावनाएं मानव जीवन को पशु से पृथक करती हैं। प्रत्येक मनुष्य में अच्छी व बुरी दोनों प्रकार की भावनाओं का समावेश होता है। किस मनुष्य में कौन-सी भावनाएं या वृत्तियां अधिक प्रभावी हैं, वही उसे तुलनात्मक रूप से अच्छा या बुरा बनाती हैं। वृत्तियों को नियंत्रित करना या उनका प्रबंधन करना न सिर्फ एक कठिन कार्य है बल्कि एक साधना है, क्योंकि यह व्यक्तित्व का एक हिस्सा है और व्यक्तित्व के गुणों में परिवर्तन कर पाना असम्भव नहीं तो कठिन तो है ही। मानवीय भावनाओं यथा घृणा, लालच, हिंसा, क्रोध्, काम, मोह आदि का विश्लेषण करना आसान काम नहीं है। लेखक ने इस पुस्तक में इसी कठिन कार्य को पूरा करने का प्रयास किया है।
