Understanding the Regional Dynamics of Vulnerability

Understanding the Regional Dynamics of Vulnerability

Guoyi Han; Ying Li; Peijun Shi

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K

This book presents a detailed regional study of the Dongting Lake Area and explores potential avenues and challenges for future flood risk management in China. Focusing on dynamic changes in regional vulnerability to flooding and its relevance for flood risk management, it proposes a new construct of vulnerability based on the co-variance between the negative (exposure) and positive (response capacity) components. Further, it develops an historical approach, including trajectory analysis and a typology of vulnerability, offering insights into the regional dynamics of change. It is a valuable resource for disaster risk researchers and graduate students as well as flood management practitioners and policy-makers. Guoyi Han is a senior research fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute in Sweden; both Associate Professor Ying Li and Professor Peijun Shi work at the Beijing Normal University in China.

This textbook provides a comprehensive and very detailed insight into Chinese Contemporary Geography in English. It documents the geographical issues associated with China's rapid growth. Since initiating the reforms and open policy, China has achieved tremendous success. China's rapid growth is now a driving force in the global economy and is achieving unprecedented rates of poverty reduction. However, China also faces a number of sustainability and emerging challenges associated with rapid growth such as growing regional disparities in terms of per capita income and social-economic development, sustainable resource development, and issues related to regional and global economic integration. In addition, rapid economic growth has also brought about major challenges such as resource shortages, ecological and environmental destruction, land degradation and frequent disasters. This book presents the authors’ reflections. This lavishly illustrated book covers physical geography, history, and economic and political systems of the world's most populous country. The major focus is on geographical issues in China's contemporary development: agriculture, population, urbanization, resource and energy, and environment. The lead author of the book has taught relevant courses in China for three decades, and authored and edited multiple textbooks for Chinese students. This book will appeal to undergraduate students of geography and related disciplines with a regional focus on China and to the general reader who wants to learn different geographical aspects of modern China with little academic background in geography.

This is the first English language book to systematically introduce basic theories, methods and applications of disaster risk science from the angle of different subjects including disaster science, emergency technology and risk management. Viewed from basic theories, disaster risk science consists of disaster system, formation mechanism and process, covering 3 chapters in this book. From the perspective of technical methods, disaster risk science includes measurement and assessment of disasters, mapping and zoning of disaster risk, covering 4 chapters in this book. From the angle of application practices, disaster risk science contains disaster management, emergency response and integrated disaster risk paradigm, covering 3 chapters in the book. The book can be a good reference for researchers, students, and practitioners in the field of disaster risk science and natural disaster risk management for more actively participating in and supporting the development of "disaster risk science".
