Justice for Future Generations breaks new ground by discussing what ethical obligations current generations have towards future generations in addressing the threat of climate change and how such obligations should be embodied in international law. Peter Lawrence uses an interdisciplinary approach, involving discourse theory, international relations theory, and philosophical concepts of ethics and justice to inform discussion of international law. Recent political science theories are used to show why the current global climate change treaties are so weak in addressing intergenerational justice concerns. The book draws on contemporary theories of justice to develop a number of principles used to critique the existing global climate change treaties. These principles are also used as a blueprint for suggestions on how to develop a much-needed global treaty on climate change. The approach is pragmatic in that the justice-ethics argument rests on widely shared values. Moreover, the book is informed by the author's extensive experience in the negotiation of global environmental treaties as an Australian diplomat. This excellent collection of nearly 200 old photographs illustrates some of the dramatic changes that have occurred over the last century in this busy London suburb. The ancient parish, once known as 'Wilcumstowe' has, like its name, changed much in appearance over the centuries. Once a rural community it became, in the eighteenth century, a residential parish for the wealthy and influential. The trend continued into the nineteenth century with streets like Hoe Street, Forest Road and High Street sporting fine mansions. The coming of the railway in the second half of the century brought a dramatic change. Enormous growth took place with the improvement in transport it brought and in just forty years the population rose from 11,000 to 124,500. One of the book's authors descended from a family that moved to Walthamstow at the turn of the century, and the book contains photographs from his family's archives that show aspects of life during this period, adding a personal touch to this nostalgic trip into the recent part.

Easy and cheap access to the metropolis enabled people for the first time to commute to work and so thousands sought housing in areas like this and initiated the growth on the London suburbs. When the Midland Railway's route passed through Leyton and Leytonstone in 1894 it was the signal for a population rise that transformed the community from a parish that had numbered around 5,000 in 1861 to an urban district council in 1901 of nearly 99,000 people. These photographs show many aspects of life in the area from the time of this great expansion and through the decades that followed. This book will fascinate all who know Leyton and Leytonstone and would enjoy a nostalgic trip into its recent past.
