This book provides a means of comprehensively grounding and considering the epistemological and philosophical underpinnings of practice-based research epistemologies. By introducing readers to the diverse array of methodological tools and concepts that are necessary to underpin postgraduate research, this book develops an understanding of the distinctions between practice-led research, practice-based research and question-led research, and the contextual significance of each, as well as enabling students to comprehend the historical relationships between academic disciplines and the value of reconnecting them at an epistemological and philosophical level. Through illustrated examples from applied practice across disciplines such as art, social sciences and medical and allied healthcare sciences, readers are encouraged to develop the capacity to not only think conceptually about their own research, but to systematically evaluate that of others. With this focus on descriptive studies from practice, the book fosters higher-order critical thinking in relation to implications for methodological implementation, encouraging deep learning processes and the confidence to transcend the limits of one’s own discipline in order to work collaboratively with researchers in different fields.

Based on a well-established and popular course taught by the authors over many years, Stochastic Processes: An Introduction, Third Edition, discusses the modelling and analysis of random experiments, where processes evolve over time. The text begins with a review of relevant fundamental probability. It then covers gambling problems, random walks, and Markov chains. The authors go on to discuss random processes continuous in time, including Poisson, birth and death processes, and general population models, and present an extended discussion on the analysis of associated stationary processes in queues. The book also explores reliability and other random processes, such as branching, martingales, and simple epidemics. A new chapter describing Brownian motion, where the outcomes are continuously observed over continuous time, is included. Further applications, worked examples and problems, and biographical details have been added to this edition. Much of the text has been reworked. The appendix contains key results in probability for reference. This concise, updated book makes the material accessible, highlighting simple applications and examples. A solutions manual with fully worked answers of all end-of-chapter problems, and Mathematica® and R programs illustrating many processes discussed in the book, can be downloaded from crcpress.com.

This book brings together, in a concise format, the key elements of the loads produced from explosive sources, and how they interact with structures. Explosive sources include gas, high explosives, dust and nuclear materials. It presents quantitative information and design methods in a useable form without recourse to extensive mathematical analysis. The authors, Peter Smith and John Hetherington, are staff members at the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham and have been instrumental in establishing an active team studying the response of structures to blast and ballistic loading.

The Procurement Compendium is a collection of short articles relating to procurement and supply chain management, first published online via Spend Matters and Public Spend Forum websites. They aim to inform, provoke, occasionally educate and sometimes even amuse. Although procurement is the broad theme, topics range from Machiavelli's thinking on change management to "licensing the procurement profession" the James Bond way; from the reasons for David Cameron's EU negotiation failure to why technology should revolutionise category management; and from consultants over-charging to advice on speaking at conferences.

First published in 1994, this book describes how cooperative group work can enhance relationships in the classroom, reduce prejudice and alleviate problems of victimisation and peer rejection. It combines quantitative experimental analysis with detailed case studies; considers the impact of the family on pupil behaviour; and concludes with practical recommendations to foster social acceptance in the classroom. There is a strong emphasis on helping teachers to develop group work in their classrooms as an effective means of averting trouble and inducing a genuinely better attitude to collaboration with their fellow pupils. The difficulties in implementation which can arise if teachers are not motivated, or if pupils are disruptive, are honestly confronted. The book will also help educational and developmental psychologists involved in resolving behavioural difficulties resulting from social tensions in multi-ethnic classrooms.

Modern Latin America is a vivid interpretive history an authoritative text in the field. Featuring stimulating, anecdotal boxes, the book uses case studies to discuss the primary countries and themes of the region over the past 200 years. For each country, Peter H. Smith, and James N. Green continue the impeccable scholarship of Thomas Skidmore, who passed away in 2016. They examine such central themes as the Iberian-New World interaction, racial prejudices and policy, military developments, and U. S. interventionism in Latin America.

The Sex Pistols exploded onto the music scene in 1976, paving the way for the deluge of punk rock that would change the face of modern rock music forever. Their debut album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols, proved one of the most important rock albums of all time, fusing slammed rock chords with searing vocals. The Sex Pistols simply, and seemingly effortlessly, blew away all that had come before them, setting an entirely new bar for rock acts that followed in their wake. In Sex Pistols: The Pride of Punk, Peter Smith explores the impact the band had on launching the punk movement, beginning in 1976 with their debut single and ending in 1978 with their American tour. Despite their brief career, the Sex Pistols illustrate an important set of political and cultural elements of 1970s UK and US culture: disaffected youth, strained international relations, and rapid changes in culture. Peter Smith digs deep to collate the factors that fueled the Sex Pistols and the punk revolution.
