Sans doute, trois si cles plus tard, le ton tr s sermonnaire des premiers chapitres pourrait tonner, voire rebuter; cependant, outre l'int r t historique pour la connaissance de la spiritualit protestante, ces textes deviennent de plus en plus touchants mesure que l'auteur d crit les progr s de la vie chr tienne; et ses pri res, bien que compos es, gardent une spontan it et une fra cheur qui justifiaient amplement leur r dition. Sur le plan th ologique, Philip Doddridge, qui a crit plus de 400 hymnes, tait un calviniste mod r , se rapprochant de Richard Baxter. Son livre eut une grande influence dans la conversion de William Wilberforce et dans la croissance spirituelle de John Newton.

The Life of Col. Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), pastor of a Congregationalist church in Castle Hill, Northampton, is most remembered today as a hymn-writer and author of the spiritual classic The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul (1745). However, Doddridge was also a leading figure in biblical education, both for pastors and children, a founder of the Sunday school movement, and a pivotal character in revival and religious reform. He served as an evangelical link between such religious leaders as Isaac Watts (1674-1748) and George Whitefield (1714-1770). The Evil and Danger of Neglecting the Souls of Men is a sermon which distills Doddridge's care and concern for the role of the pastor, particularly, and the church, in general, in stewarding revival and evangelism. Church leaders would do well to read and take to heart the convictions bound in this volume.
