"Of the gladdest moments in human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands." --Sir Richard Francis BurtonSir Richard Francis Burton, the protagonist of Philip Jos Farmer's To Your Scattered Bodies Go, had even more adventures in real life than he did in fiction. His exploits include journeying to Mecca in disguise, at a time when Europeans were forbidden access on pain of death; publishing unexpurgated English translations of One Thousand and One Nights and The Kama Sutra; and, along with John Hanning Speke, was one of the first Europeans to visit the Great Lakes of Africa in search of the source of the Nile. Burton was a captain in the army of the East India Company and later served briefly in the Crimean War. He was engaged by the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa, where he led an expedition guided by locals and was the first European known to have seen Lake Tanganyika. He served as British consul in Fernando P , Santos in Brazil, Damascus, and finally in Trieste. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was awarded a knighthood in 1886. This biography by Farmer opens in 1855, when Burton was thirty-four years old and on the expedition searching for the source of the Nile. Written for a men's magazine in 1953, but not used, the manuscript languished in obscurity until it was finally published in 2006 in the collection Pearls from Peoria, edited by Paul Spiteri. Published for the first time here in an affordable standalone edition, featuring cover and interior art by Charles Berlin, introductory material by Mick Walton (author of Sir Richard Burton and His Circle), Mark Hodder (author of the Burton and Swinburne novels) and Paul Spiteri (co-author, with Farmer, of "Getting Ready to Write"), A Rough Knight for the Queen is Farmer's loving biography of one of his heroes.

Philip Jos Farmer's Up from the Bottomless Pit, originally written in the late 1970s with the working title The Dragon's Breath, is a near-mainstream novel about the ultimate ecological nightmare. Set in an alternate/near future 1970s, Up from the Bottomless Pit tells of a world so ravenous in its desire for oil that it has thrown caution to the wind. Using an experimental deep-water laser drill off the California coast, humankind burns a hole through the ocean floor only to unleash a deadly torrent that initially threatens the greater Los Angeles area, but quickly escalates to a catastrophe of worldwide proportions with the potential to wipe out all life on the planet. The novel wasn't quite what Del Rey was looking for at the time, so Phil instead turned in Dark is the Sun (set fifteen billion years in the future). Fast forward to 2005 and the team here at Meteor House was launching the fanzine Farmerphile: The Magazine of Philip Jos Farmer. We serialized the novel over the first 10 quarterly issues between 2005 and 2007. At $11 per issue, it cost over $100 to read the novel. In 2007, Subterranean Press published Up from the Bottomless Pit and Other Stories, collecting all of Phil's material from Farmerphile in a deluxe limited edition of only 250 copies. But, at $125, it again cost over $100 to read this book. This is the Farmer novel you've heard about but never got to read Now, available for the first time ever in a trade paperback edition, featuring cover art by Keith Howell, a foreword by Farmerphile editor Christopher Paul Carey, and an introduction by award winning environmental writer Sharman Apt Russell

One of the most famous heroes in literature is back Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, returns with a vengeance in this action-packed adventure by Philip Jos Farmer, Hugo Award winner, Nebula Grand Master, and author of the incredible Riverworld saga. Tarzan's beloved mate, Jane, has been kidnapped, and the furious ape-man will let nothing stand in the way of rescuing her--not even a sinister safari whose target is Tarzan himself. With fierce Masai trackers leading the chase, a trio of white hunters are hellbent on capturing the Jungle Lord. But as the pursuers, and their uncanny half-human tracker, close in from behind, Tarzan races toward even greater danger ahead. For the trail leads to a bizarre, long-forgotten land boasting a multitude of strange and terrifying mysteries: the City Built by God, the Hideous Hunter, the One to Avoid, and most shocking of all, the Crystal Tree of Time--whose seductive powers could ultimately spell Tarzan's doom . . . Philip Jos Farmer, a descendant of the actual Greystoke family, and a recipient of the prestigious Golden Lion Award, bestowed by the Burroughs Bibliophiles at the 1970 Dum-Dum, is famous for his adventure novels starring Tarzanic characters. Now, in Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time, authorized by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Farmer lends his vast imagination to the legend of the Lord of the Apes himself In addition, this handsome new edition sports a gorgeous painted cover by well known Burroughs artist Mark Wheatley, a new Foreword by longtime Burroughs scholar Robert R. Barrett, and a new Introduction by Farmer expert Win Scott Eckert.

The street led always downward, for the city had been built on the foothills of the mountains. It wandered here and there and gave Green plenty of time to think. The trouble was, he thought, that if the two imprisoned men at Estorya were to die before he got to them he'd still be lost. He had no idea of how to pilot or navigate a spaceship. He'd been a passenger on a freighter when it had unaccountably blown up, and he'd been forced to leave the dying vessel in one of those automatic castaway emergency shells. The capsule had got him down to the surface of this planet and was, as far as he knew, still up in the hills where he'd left it. After wandering for a week and almost starving to death he'd been picked up by some peasants. They had turned him in to the soldiers of a nearby garrison, thinking he must be a runaway slave on

This is a classic science fiction short story by Philip Jose Farmer. Set three centuries in the future around a far off star, there live humans and two other sentient hominids, the reptiles and the amphibians. All three life forms wear living cloaks, known as skins. These skins allow them to communicate with each other via telepathy, and provide them with empathy and a conscience - one which gives them electric shocks should they step out of line. Rastignac takes exception to the skins and embarks on a mission to overthrow them. This work is part of our Vintage Sci-Fi Classics Series, a series in which we are republishing some of the best stories in the genre by some of its most acclaimed authors, such as Isaac Asimov, Harry Harrison, and Robert Sheckley. Each publication is complete with a short introduction to the history of science fiction.

Farmerphile: The Magazine of Philip Jos Farmer was a quarterly fanzine that ran fifteen issues from July 2005 to January 2009. Michael Croteau served as Publisher for all fifteen issues; Christopher Paul Carey and Paul Spiteri coedited the first ten issues, while Spiteri and Win Scott Eckert coedited the last five. Thanks to the generosity of Philip Jos Farmer and his "Magic Filing Cabinet," Farmerphile published--for the first time anywhere--short stories (mostly not science fiction), excerpts, articles, speeches, and letters written by Farmer. Farmerphile also contained articles and appreciations from Farmer's fans and from his fellow science fiction authors, from critiques of his work to stories of personal encounters, and everything between. Now the hard part: narrowing down so much content into one "Best of" collection. This was much harder than it sounds, as nearly all the content was worthy of inclusion. So, we focused on broadly covering as much ground as possible, as well as including pieces that touched on Farmer's personal life. Assembled here is a wealth of information about one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time along, with some of his earliest writing. Included are essays by Christopher Paul Carey, Win Scott Eckert, Paul Spiteri, Danny Adams, Art Sippo, Bob Zeuschner, Gary K. Wolfe, Robert R. Barrett, Will Murray, Tracy Knight, Steve Mattsson, Allen Steele, Alan Hanson, George H, Scheetz, Rhys Hughes, Spider Robinson, Joe R. Lansdale, Steve Mattsson, Heidi Ruby Miller, Tom Wode Bellman, Leo Queequeg Tincrowdor, and Bette Farmer.

Dayworld was born from the overpopulation and chaos of the late 21st century: live just one day out of seven, spend the rest in a suspended animation called stoning, and humanity will only need one-seventh of the resources it was consuming on its dying planet. Now, three-and-a-half centuries into this New Era-or two "subjective generations" later-everyone seems blessed with peace and abundance. But one man is about to discover that the seeds of the world's destruction were deeply planted by the time the Dayworld began. Philip Jos Farmer's short story, "The Sliced-Crosswise Only-On-Tuesday World," and trilogy, Dayworld, Dayworld Rebel, and Dayworld Breakup, explored the fascinating concept of subjective generations. He also began a prequel Dayworld novel, but did not complete it, and now Danny Adams has picked up the mantle. Set generations before the events of the original trilogy, A Hole in Wednesday has direct links to the acclaimed series, exploring the developing world and antecedent characters who defy the confines of a life lived within a "vertical calendar."

Patricia Wildman, the daughter of the world-renowned adventurer and crimefighter of the 1930s and '40s, Dr. James Clarke "Doc" Wildman, is all alone in the world when she inherits the family estate in Derbyshire, England-in true Gothic tradition, old, dark, and supposedly haunted. But is the ghost real, or a clever sham perpetrated by others to scare her off? As Patricia contends with the questionable motives of her distant relatives, attempts to discern friend from foe, and battles to overcome mysterious attackers, she struggles to reconcile the supernatural with her rational scientific upbringing, while also attempting to work through unresolved feelings about her late parents. Set at Pemberley from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and deeply ingrained in worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Lord Greystoke-as well as the bronze champion of justice, Doc Wildman-The Evil in Pemberley House is a darkly erotic novel with broad appeal to readers of pulp and popular literature, and fans of Philip Jos Farmer's own celebrated Wold Newton Family.
