Humility is the greatest virtue in the spiritual life, the virtue which unlocks the graces of the Sacred Heartof Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is the virtue by which we reach Heaven. It is the virtueOur Lord prized, for He is the greatest instructor of humility: "Learn of me, because I am meek andhumble of heart" (Matt. 11:29). In this marvelous work, Pope Leo XIII sets forth sixty counsels, little reflections, on how you can strive forthis most glorious virtue. And he concludes this book with some of the most beautiful quotes onhumility from some of the greatest saints. He wrote this powerful little work while serving as the Bishopof Perugia." Let the study of the knowledge of yourself, the fleeing from honors, and the love of humiliations, beyour weapons; and of these you should never divest yourself, no, not even for a single moment," saysPope Leo XIII. The pope further declares, "Holy Communion, by which we receive within our breasts invery substance the God made man and annihilated for love of us, is a wonderful school of humility and amost powerful means of acquiring it." Humility must be practiced daily in order to be acquired. Only a man of humility could write such aprofound work-a work, which will inspire you to battle the vice of pride with renewed vigor.

When Our Lord was tempted in the desert, the devil offered Him "all the kingdoms of the world and their glory." (Mt 4:8-9) It stands to reason that Satan was able to offer Jesus earthly kingdoms because he owned them. History has repeatedly demonstrated that earthly kingdoms remain a stronghold of Satan's evil works through man's lust for power. What then is a Christian to do while living under such earthly authority? Our Lord's rejection of Satan's temptation teaches the Christian to follow Christ alone and His Kingdom is "not of this world." (Jn 18:36). Saints throughout history, from Saint Peter to Venerable Fulton Sheen, have echoed Christ's example by rejecting the desire for earthly power and freely choosing to love God and neighbor despite living within modern day kingdoms replete with evil influence. They teach: "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29), "An unjust law is no law at all" (Saint Augustine of Hippo), and not to "wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person" (Saint Teresa of Calcutta). Following the method Saint Thomas Aquinas used in Summa Theologiae, Summa Libertas draws on Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the writings of the saints to guide a sound case for a libertarian Christianity. Readers will find that not only are the principles of liberty compatible with the faith-they are, in fact, necessary.

In conclusion. His Holiness has embellished this treatise with a rich appendix of various thoughts culled from spiritual writers, and preceded by the sermon of the great Bishop of Hippo upon the "Fear of God and True Humility." On confronting in their originals St Benedict's immortal chapter on Humility with the discourse of St. Augustine, it is quite perceptible that this must have been a source from which the Monastic Legislator drew his inspirations, using as he does in one place its very words and expressions. It may be interesting to know that fourteen hundred years later, another Light and Law-giver of the Church repaired to the same fountain. For at the audience in which the Pope graciously accorded permission for the present translation, he condescended to enter upon the motives which led him to compose this valuable treatise, avowing that it was this very sermon of St. Augustine which had inspired him with its first conception. Pope Leo XIII, who reigned for over a quarter of a century, following the second longest reigning pope in history, Pope Pius IX, has come to be know as the Pope of the Rosary.
