The task of medicine is to preserve and restore health and to relieve suffering. Understanding pain is essential to both of these goals. Since pain remains a universally understood signal of disease, it is the most common symptom that brings a patient to a physician's attention. Pain management is probably one of the most common problems dealt with in dentistry, especially by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The current write up throws light on the nature of pain, its pathophysiology, how its presence becomes a constant nuisance and its management- pharmacological and non pharmacological.
