Few countries celebrate religious and cultural festivals with greater passion, imagination, and joy than India. And among the many festivals of this gloriously diverse, multicultural nation is Christmas. The Christian communities of India celebrate the birth of Christ with food, music, lights, prayer, family gatherings, charity, and other age-old traditions. This anthology captures the distinctive magic of Christmas in India and in the Indian diaspora with a splendid collection of essays, stories, poems, and hymns―both in English and translated from India's other languages. It includes works by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Booker Prize winners Salman Rushdie and Aravind Adiga, Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri, Khushwant Singh, Jerry Pinto, Damodar Mauzo, Vivek Menezes, Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar, and others writing about Christmas in Goa, Kerala, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, as well as in London and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
"Gora" is one of the finest masterpieces of Rabindra Nath Tagore. This novel is about a young man who is a traditional Hindu. He presents himself against the British colonists culture. He takes the support of organized religion to oppose the British regime in India. the fine portrayal of the Bengal of 1900's is a major achievement for Tagore. The tussle between old and new is very thrilling, although Tagore's 'mild style' makes the proceedings 'soft and humble'. No doubts, 'Gora" is one of the finest literary pieces of Bangla literature and here we present an authentic English version of 'Gora'. A must-read for the elite thinkers.
Suomentaja Hannele Pohjanmies on koonnut 130 Tagoren rakkausrunoa eri kokoelmista. Basam Books on aiemmin julkaissut Tagorelta kirjan Gitanjali (2013).
Gora (1910) is Tagore's fifth novel and is considered his masterpiece. Canvassing the social, cultural, religious and political life of nineteenth century urban middle-class Bengali, it is a landmark in the history of the Bengali novel. The novel is believed to be an expression of Tagore's own transition from Hindu revivalism to universal brotherhood, from nationalism to internationalism, from the acceptance of rigid Brahmanism and Hinduism to the religion of man. Gora was translated into English by W. W. Pearson in 1924.

Tagore, a Bengalese writer, artist and thinker won the 1913 Nobel Prize for Literature and became an international celebrity. These essays arose from an international Tagore Conference held in London in 1986 which aimed to reassess the range of his achievement and the catholicity of his thought.
