Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is a procedure that allows a clinician to examine the airways by placing a thin tube-like instrument through the nose or mouth and down into the lungs. The tube sends pictures back to a video screen or camera. The procedure can be either diagnostic or therapeutic to treat various pulmonary conditions, especially bronchogenic carcinoma. Comprising two parts, this book begins with a practical introduction to the art of bronchoscopy, followed by a concise clinical history, chest X-rays, computed tomography (CT), and bronchoscopic pictures of interesting cases selected from 5,000 bronchoscopic procedures. Each case is described in detail, highlighting normal and abnormal findings, as well as possible complications and contraindications. The atlas also includes sections on paediatric bronchoscopy and likely future advances in the field. The previous edition (9789350903407) published in 2013.

Also covers practical approach to prevention of allergy, and paediatric issues in the management of allergic diseases. Chapters include allergic rhinitis, ocular allergy, urticaria, angioedema, atopic dermatitis, drug allergy and food allergy. Special chapters on allergies to latex, human seminal plasma, aspirin, hymenoptera, radio-contrast, local and general anaesthetic, cow's milk are included. Anticonvulsants hypersensitivity syndrome, sublingual immunotherapy, cluster immunotherapy and the future of immunotherapy are also covered.
Increases in various fungal infections due to Candida, Aspergillus, Blastomyces, Histoplasma spp., and Dermatophytes have attracted interest in the biochemistry of the fungal pathogens responsible. This book discusses the importance of lipids in pathogenic fungi and how they are involved in infections that pose serious health problems. The role of lipids in dimorphism, adherence, and virulence of fungi is investigated as is their composition and metabolism. Several chapters are devoted to examinations of specific pathogenic fungi, which will be particularly useful to researchers studying the clinical manifestations of infections caused by these factors. Later chapters present possible antifungal agents and nonconventional agents that target the organisms discussed earlier. Collectively, the contributions to this volume provide an excellent overview of this field. This text is essential for practicing clinicians and for everyone involved in the important task of resolving the problems associated with fungal pathogenicity.

Although previously thought to be merely passive structural components, membrane lipids have recently been found to be actively involved in cellular transport and signal transduction processes. Clear protocols for the study of membrane lipid properties, cellular transport or signal transduction are presented in this manual. Following a short introduction to membrane lipids, techniques for the isolation and extraction of membrane fractions, the analysis of the lipid composition, lipid turnover, and the involvement in signal transduction as well as the preparation of liposomes are described.
Most textbooks in the field are either too advanced for students or don’t adequately cover current research topics. Bridging this gap, Electronic Structure of Materials helps advanced undergraduate and graduate students understand electronic structure methods and enables them to use these techniques in their work. Developed from the author’s lecture notes, this classroom-tested book takes a microscopic view of materials as composed of interacting electrons and nuclei. It explains all the properties of materials in terms of basic quantities of electrons and nuclei, such as electronic charge, mass, and atomic number. Based on quantum mechanics, this first-principles approach does not have any adjustable parameters. The first half of the text presents the fundamentals and methods of electronic structure. Using numerous examples, the second half illustrates applications of the methods to various materials, including crystalline solids, disordered substitutional alloys, amorphous solids, nanoclusters, nanowires, graphene, topological insulators, battery materials, spintronic materials, and materials under extreme conditions. Every chapter starts at a basic level and gradually moves to more complex topics, preparing students for more advanced work in the field. End-of-chapter exercises also help students get a sense of numbers and visualize the physical picture associated with the problem. Students are encouraged to practice with the electronic structure calculations via user-friendly software packages.
