Reprinted in facsimile format from the printing plates of the First Edition book. What will civilization be like 20,000 years from now? Were it not for the important discovery of Loto Rogers and his father that time, like space, may be traversed, we should still remain in ignorance of the future. Loto succeeded in constructing a machine with which to navigate the future and then he darted two hundred centuries forward in time. War, with deadly new weapons, unknown to this day and age, confronted Loto shortly after his arrival. Because of his scientific knowledge he soon took a leading part in this combat of hate and greed and lust, making his new life one fraught with constant danger. Loto soon lerned that he was living in a time when the romantic and mysterious were commonplace; a time of the unbelievable, often the impossible. He had stepped into a world in which almost anything could happen. And now, all the glamour, all the magic, all the sinister undercurrents of that future world, are revealed in this fast moving, fascinating story of Loto's adventurous life in a civilization 20,000 years from the present.

This story, a classic piece of science fiction, was among the first to examine the atomic universe. In the novel The Girl in the Golden Atom, a teenage scientist discovers a secret atomic universe inside his mother's wedding band. He uses a microscope to reveal a stunning young woman seated in front of a cave inside the ring. She has him spellbound, and he shrinks to fit into her world. Ray Cummings (1887-1957), who worked for Thomas Alva Edison, was fascinated by the potential of science and started writing science fiction. When The Girl in the Golden Atom was published in 1923, it was a huge success, and Cummings went on to create the equally popular follow-up novel The People of the Golden Atom. This Bison Books version includes both books as well as a fresh introduction written by Jack Williamson.

There were nine major planets in the Solar System and it was within their boundaries that man first set up interplanetary commerce and began trading with the ancient Martian civilization. And then they discovered a tenth planet-a maverick This tenth world, if it had an orbit, had a strange one, for it was heading inwards from interstellar space, heading close to the Earth-Mars space ways, upsetting astronautic calculations and raising turmoil on the two inhabited worlds.

"In "Tarrano the Conqueror" is presented a tale of the year 2430 A. D.-a time somewhat farther beyond our present-day era than we are beyond Columbus' discovery of America. My desire has been to create for you the impression that you have suddenly been plunged forward into that time-to give you the feeling Columbus might have had could he have read a novel of our present-day life."

When George Randolph first caught sight of Orena, he was astounded by its gleaming perfection. Here were hills and valleys, lakes and streams, glowing with the light of the most precious of metals. And, more astonishing than that, it was a world of miniature perfection-an infinitely tiny universe within a golden atom But for Randolph it was also a world aglow with danger. Somewhere in its tiny vastness were the friends he had to rescue. Captives of a madman, they had been reduced to native Orena size; to return to Earth they needed the growth capsules Randolph was bringing them. It was up to Randolph to find them-and quickly-for the longer they stayed tiny, the closer they came to passing beyond the vanishing point

The first of the new meteors landed on the earth in November, 1940. It was discovered by a farmer in his field near Brookline, Massachusetts, shortly after daybreak on the morning of the 11th. Astronomically, the event was recorded by the observatory at Harvard as the sudden appearance of what apparently was a new star, increasing in the short space of a few hours from invisibility to a power beyond that of the first magnitude, and then as rapidly fading again to invisibility. This star was recorded by two of the other great North American observatories, and by one in the Argentine Republic. That it was comparatively small in mass and exceedingly close to the earth, even when first discovered, was obvious. All observers agreed that it was a heavenly body of an entirely new order.
