Reynold A. Nicholson

A re-issue in paperback of Nicholson's classic survey of the field of Islamic mysticism. Intended as reading for students of sufism, philosophy and literature, it also provides an introduction to the translations of both R. A. Nicholson and A. J. Arberry.

A Literary History of the Arabs, published in 1907 and twice re-issued without alteration, now appears under new auspices, this is volume four. With an updated bibliography and an added appendix which includes a certain amount of supplementary matter.

MawlanaJalal al-Din Rumi's poem, the Mathnawi, is one of the best known and most influential works of Muslim mysticism. Nicholson's critical edition is based on the oldest known manuscript, including the earliest, dated 1278, and preserved in the Mawlana Museum at Qonya.

This description of the province of Fars, was written around the beginning of the 12th century A. D. The author cites his qualifications for it "I was well acquainted with the present condition of the people of Fars ... being well versed also in the events of their history and exactly acquainted with the story of their kings and rulers." First published in 1998. The following essays conclude a series of five, which fall into two groups and are therefore published in separate volumes. While mysticism, save for a few casual references, found no place in the studies on the Lubdbu 'l-Albdb of 'Awff and the Luzumiyydt of Abu '1-'Ala al-Ma'arri, in these now brought together it has taken entire possession of the field. Ibnu 'l-Farid, indeed, is an exquisite poet; and the picture of Abu Sa'id ibn Abi '1-Khayr, drawn by pious faith and coloured with legendary romance, may be looked upon as a work of art in its way. But on the whole the literary interest of the present volume is subordinate to the religious and philosophical. The author has tried to make the reader acquainted with three Sufis famous in the East and worthy of being known in Europe.

The three volumes of English translation can either be bought as a set, or individually; together they comprise a complete translation. Volume 6 comprises a translation of Books V and VI.

Reynold A. Nicholson (1868–1945) was a prominent English Orientalist who wrote extensively on both Islamic literature and Islamic mysticism. Originally published in 1923, this volume is based on a series of three lectures delivered by Nicholson at the School of Oriental Studies during the summer of 1922. The chief purpose of the text is to show that Sufism is not necessarily pantheistic, but often bears the marks of a genuine personal religion inspired by a personal God. This book will be of value to anyone interested in the development of Orientalism and interpretations of Islamic thought.

This is a study of three early Sufi figures: Abu Sa'id (b. 967, d. 1049), al-Jili (b. 1365-9, d. 1406-1417), and Ibnu 'l-Farid (b. 1182, d. 1235). The text includes historical and legendary narratives of these Sufi masters, and detailed discussion of their philosophy and theology. The book concludes with an extended critical translation of the Odes of Ibnu 'l-Farid. Reynold Nicholson also wrote The Mystics of Islam, and translated Iqbal's The Secrets of the Self. His translation of Rumi's Masnavi between 1925 and 1940 (which for copyright reasons can't be posted at this site) is considered his life's masterpiece, and the basis of much of the contemporary interest in Rumi. "Bewilderment (hayra) when caused by letting the eye wander in different directions, is pernicious; but praiseworthy, when it is the result of gazing concentratedly on the beauty of the Beloved. The latter is characteristic of one who has lost himself in Divine contemplation. "O Lord, increase my bewilderment " -A famous Sufi's prayer.
