Baptists and the Communion of Saints

Baptists and the Communion of Saints

Paul S. Fiddes; Brian Haymes; Richard Kidd

Baylor University Press

This book fuses the Church's traditional doctrine of the Communion of Saints and Baptists' theology of salvation and discipleship--charting how Baptists can speak of a communion of saints here and now. Paul Fiddes and his coauthors emphasize that this communion is only possible within the fellowship of the triune God who covenants with and for believers. Reframing communion within a theology of covenant enables the affirmation of the practice of prayer and mutual support with all faithful disciples, both alive and dead. Such a covenantal understanding of communion avoids an unhealthy obsession with communication with those who have died. Baptists and the Communion of Saints thus makes a significant and practical difference in the way Baptists understand the nature of the church, prepare their worship, care for the dying and the bereaved, go on spiritual journeys, and celebrate baptism and the Lord's Supper.

An engaging classroom playscript. Ebenezer Scrooge is a grumbling, cold-hearted, shrivelled old miser who deplores the warmth and merriment of Christmas. One freezing, candlelit Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the chain-bound ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley, who seeks to warn him of the error of his ways. Over the course of the night, a series of spirits arrive, but can they teach Scrooge the true meaning of Christmas before it's too late?

Do you have to be dead to be famous? Stanley Buckle is a quiet sort of boy. Since his dad died, his closest friend has been Neville, an artist who lives in an old mill with a one-eared cat called Vincent. Then Neville mysteriously vanishes in a terrible flood. As the story of Neville's disappearance spreads, the price of his paintings rockets. Stanley is shocked to discover that Neville's work is worth more when he's dead than when he's alive. Then Stanley discovers something even more astounding - something that is to lead him into the most dangerous adventure of his life. Set partly in rural England and partly in the Scottish isles in the 1960s, this is a very special adventure tale with an original emotional edge.
