Implant dentistry developed in an era when implant education was minimal and for the most part was kept outside of the dental school and speciality training. However, once long-term clinical data based on sound research and sound principles were developed, implant dentistry rapidly became an accepted alternative to traditional prostheses. Today the widespread acceptance of the field is evident in almost every speciality. However, regardless of past experience in dentistry, implantology uses several unique methods and concepts not present in any existing specialty. The procedures of patient selection, diagnosis, treatment planning, implant selection, surgical placement and prosthetic management are intellectually and technically demanding. Meticulous attention to the finest details are required to achieve the level of success that has been documented in literature.
