Author Rina Singh met two eight-year-olds in 2018, one from Syria and one from Iraq. Both had been displaced by violence and turmoil in their home countries, and out of their stories came the fictitious character, Abdul, of this book. As Abdul and his mother endure uncertainty and hardship, waiting for the day when they'll "wake up in a place where there is no rubble, no debris," they hold on to hope against all the odds. Although certainly not every refugee's tale ends as happily as Abdul's, the overarching message that everyone deserves to find a safe place in the world shines through.

Brothers Nadeem and Saud grew up in Delhi watching the majestic raptors called black kites circle in the sky above their heads. But every year, when paper-kite-flying season came and people brought out their glass-coated kite strings called manja to have friendly battles, the beautiful birds faced dangerous skies. One day, the brothers found a black kite tangled in manja, but their local vet couldn't help. As they got older, the brothers never forgot that day. Learning from a local vet, who taught them how to mend a bird's wing, and a neighbour who trained pigeons, they began to rescue and rehabilitate injured black kites. Bird Brothers, A Delhi Story depicts the powerful true story of Nadeem Shehzad and Mohammad Saud, who have devoted their lives to helping these birds return to the sky.

The streets were empty and the playgrounds still. Puzzled but determined, the bird explores the town in search of a suitable place to nest. The residents of an apartment building notice her resting in a tree outside and take comfort in her song. Watching through their windows, they look beyond their lives and pause to appreciate the wonders of nature. Trees don't grow on sandbars . . . but a boy from India grew a forest. What can one person do in the face of global environmental degradation? Indian Jadav Payeng has proven that each and every one of us can make a difference. As a boy, he began planting trees on a sandbank in the state of Assam. Nobody believed that he would succeed in doing so. But since 1979, a forest the size of Central Park has emerged, offering a home to countless animals and plants. It was not until 2007 that a photographer accidentally discovered the forest and made Payeng known to the world beyond India. Rina Singh has sensitively retraced the story of young Jadav. In Ishita Jain's picture book debut as illustrator, readers feel immersed in the spectacular habitat whose existence borders on a miracle come true.
