Robert Kramer

Once considered Sigmund Freud's designated heir, Otto Rank was an interdisciplinary thinker and prodigious author of twenty-two books. After being expelled from Freud's inner circle in 1926--due to Freud's opposition to the pre-Oedipal thesis of The Trauma of Birth (1924)--Rank had a highly productive life as a teacher, psychotherapist, and writer. In this book, noted Rank scholar Robert Kramer argues that Rank, not Freud, created modern psychotherapy, which focuses on the therapist-client relationship. Rank's "will therapy" and his teaching on relationship and the creative will impacted not only modern psychotherapy but also social work and existential psychology. His influence can particularly be seen in the work of Carl Rogers (Psychotherapy), Jessie Taft and Virginia Robinson (Social Work), and Rollo May and Irvin Yallom (Existential Psychology). A dazzling thinker, Rank influenced many artists and writers, including Samuel Beckett, Salvador Dalí, Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller, Betty Friedan, D. W. Winnicott, and, most significantly, Ernest Becker, Pulitzer prize-winning author of The Denial of Death (1973). Kramer argues that if the 20th century was the century of Freud, the 21st century is shaping up to be the century of Rank as no other psychoanalyst's theories have ever been tested with as much empirical rigor, and across so many different cultures, as those of Rank. This book translates Rank's complex thought into language any reader can grasp easily.

In summer 1997, French film critic and historian Bernard Eisenschitz met with Robert Kramer three times to speak in detail about Kramer's life and work, covering thirty years of filmmaking. The exchange between friends starts with his early, activist years and his involvement with the Newsreel Collective, considers essential films like Ice (1969) and Milestones (1975), and traces Kramer's orientation towards Europe and relocation to France in the late 1970s. Going back and forth between Europe, the USA, Portugal, and Vietnam, Kramer was consistently able to work and make films like Doc's Kingdom (1987), Route One/USA (1989), and Starting Place (1993). He passed away in 1999. The conversation was published in French in 2001 as Points de départ. More than 20 years later, Starting Places: A Conversation with Robert Kramer makes this illuminating account of a "mid-Atlantic" filmmaker available in its original language for the first time. The book is complemented by three of Kramer's essays from the 1980s and 1990s and an updated bibliography and filmography.

Veer by Robert Kramer is a new poetry collection that reveals the unspoken, the unseen, the hinted at, the strange shadow land where dream and reality fuse. Kramer's experience as a translator of a wide array of European Literature brings an additional dimension to these poems.

"In this exquisitely thoughtful little collection, Robert Kramer guides his readers, holding aloft a lantern lit by lucid verse and canny eye, through night, through fog, through mist, to the secret place where we surprise Life: fast asleep, and fitfully dreaming. This urbane poet has brought us along on a search for understanding, and with him we have done much spelunking into the caverns of the soul." - Donald Lev, poet, publisher of Home Planet News "Robert Kramer offers this collection, entitled Wordglass, replete with sensitive similes that convey deeply felt and liminal experiences, many of them erotic. Most of these poems also feature instances of a final image that is shocking, grotesque, or improbable, yet very real." - Laurence Nannery, author of The Estoteric Composition of Kafka's Corpus "These twenty-three poems are meant to be read with pleasure. But to fully appreciate them, read them out loud - and discover our wonders - and Kramer's pleasures, honoring poets we all applaud, German and French poets of our time and sensitivity, and intelligence. In fact not only will these poems give you unexpected pleasures, but they will also allow you to delve into Kramer's multiple sensitivities and talents." - Serge Gavronsky, Professor of French Literature, Barnard College, Columbia University, New York

Send Me A Copy is a "literal" time capsule of the world as we were notified about it through little pieces of paper at our workplace. Even without computers, e-mail and the Internet, nothing could stop us from being able to communicate to one another and exercise our playful or intellectual sides a little--even while at work From the water fountain to one cubical to the next, we shared precious moments, sayings, jokes and major events to one another. This book, through its compilation of the very messages we passed around to one another, will make you laugh, and sometimes make you cry. It will kindle the nostalgia of your past in a perspective very unique to the views of others in the workforce, where we all have spent approximately one-third of our lives. Many things we agreed with. Others, we disagreed. And most of the time, we just laughed until our sides ached from the clever wit that can only be found in that stream of consciousness of humanity we were so connected to in the workplace. We enjoyed and appreciated those moments of escape. And you can enjoy them again and again, anytime you'd like. Whether on the thrown or by a cup of coffee reminiscing with friends, you will enjoy this book and refer back to it for years to come. Get your copy today and save a piece of much of the relevance of our past.
