Arthur is a worn-out war veteran who now sits on his veranda smoking and coughing his heart out and watching the world go by. He watches as a group of seasonal workers steal goods from his mate Phil's General Store across the road. He informs Phil of the thefts and Phil then employs a friend of Arthur's, a fourteen-year-old girl called Jilly, to keep an eye on the store. The gang kidnaps Jilly from the store and take her to a bush hideout where they beat her, terrorise her and sexually molest her. Arthur mounts his worn-out old mare Blacky, and goes after the criminals, unconcerned for his own welfare. He doesn't care if he dies saving Jilly. His lone crusade leads to a great deal of bloodshed and anguish for himself, Jilly and her family. His mission becomes clouded with more and more difficulties and unexpected twists and turns, finally reaching a bloody and unexpected climax.

When Carla eventually joins him, they find themselves in a whirlpool of crazy, outrageous and often dangerous behaviour, from which they believe there is no escape. In a frenzied effort to preserve his own sanity Mickey is forced to change from a meek and mild nineteen year-old mental patient to a seasoned, hard-nosed negotiator, protector and drug-dealer. Mickey and Carla embark on a desperate fight for survival in a sordid, mixed-up culture of lunacy, hallucination and imagined invasion.

With this study, Menzies sets a new standard for pneumatology. Beginning with an overview of the pneumatological perspectives of intertestamental Judaism (including literature from the Diaspora, Palestinian, Qumran and rabbinic sources), the first section concludes that for the most part these sources 'consistently identify experience of the Spirit with prophetic inspiration'. The next section aims to uncover Luke's distinctive pneumatology, employing a redaction critical method of analysis in order to illustrate Luke's similarly consistent portrayal of the Spirit as the source of prophetic inspiration, rather than as the source of Christian existence. The final section goes on to explore how this conclusion impacts on contemporary theological reflection and spiritual life. Robert P. Menzies is Lecturer in New Testament at Asia Pacific Theological Seminary, Baguio City, Philippines.
