The Sunshine Locality in the geographic center of the Great Basin has been the focus of scientific research since the mid-1960s. Authors Charlotte Beck and George T. Jones began studies there in 1992 and carried out excavations between 1993 and 1997 with the assistance of Hamilton College Field School. The area has yielded a rich and varied collection of diagnostic lithic tools, including fluted and unfluted lanceolate projectile points and a crescent, and a variety of gravers, scrapers, notches, and other tools common in Paleoindian toolkits across North America. This volume provides the first comprehensive treatment that combines historical research with the more recent studies. Analysis and interpretations of the stratigraphic sequence in Sunshine Wash are presented, including analyses of sedimentary textures and structure, depositional processes, and chronology. Faunal remains are used to evaluate local and regional environmental changes. Finally, the authors address the nature of the processes that created the archaeological record at Sunshine Locality, its age, and whether artifacts and remains of extinct mammals also recovered at the site are associated. This work begins to answer unresolved questions about the paleoenvironmental resources of the Sunshine Locality.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE FROM RENOWNED CONSERVATION PHOTOGRAPHER CRISTINA MITTERMEIER, WITH A FOREWORD BY ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST AND ACTOR ROBERT REDFORD. From ocean shores and Arctic glaciers to some of the most remote indigenous communities in the world, HOPE explores humanity’s relationship with the planet and possibilities for a mindful, sustainable future. This artistic manifesto is a celebration of the beauty of our planet’s biodiversity and a tribute to indigenous wisdom and stewardship, weaving photographer and marine biologist Cristina Mittermeier’s personal narrative with meaningful visual stories from a journey spanning over 130 countries, across every continent. Her images reflect a commitment to environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and social equity. With its radiant photography and candid prose, HOPE explores the beauty of an interconnected world: the majesty of a whale surfacing to catch its breath, the wise power of Madagascar’s baobabs, and the extraordinary resilience of people like the Kayapó fighting to save the Amazon rainforest. This impressive, bilingual English-French volume is divided into six sections—Indigenous Wisdom, Oceans of Hope, Icy Realms, The After Life, Heirs to the Earth, Interconnected—and features a foreword by legendary American actor and environmental activist Robert Redford. “The powerful origin story of one of Yellowstone’s greatest and most famous wolves.” —Washington Post“[The Rise of Wolf 8] is a goldmine for information on all aspects of wolf behavior and clearly shows they are clever, smart, and emotional beings.” —Marc Bekoff, Psychology TodayYellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves—but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995. This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves. Wolf 8 struggles at first—he is smaller than the other pups, and often bullied—but soon he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his protégé? Authored by a renowned wolf researcher and gifted storyteller, The Rise of Wolf 8 marks the beginning of The Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone series, which will transform our view of wolves forever.

When Norman Maclean sent the manuscript of A River Runs through It to New York publishers, he received a slew of rejections. One editor, so the story goes, replied, "It has trees in it." Forty years later, the title novella is recognized as one of the great American tales of the twentieth century, and Maclean as one of the most beloved writers of our time. The finely distilled product of a long life of often surprising rapture for fly fishing, for the woods and their people, and for the interlocked beauty of life and art A River Runs through It has over the decades established itself as a classic of the American West. This new edition will introduce a fresh audience to Maclean's beautiful prose and understated emotional insights. Elegantly redesigned, A River Runs through It includes a new foreword by Robert Redford, whose film adaptation of River turns twenty-five in 2017. Based on Maclean's own experiences as a young man, the two novellas and short story it contains are set in the small towns and mountains of western Montana. It is a world populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, but also one rich in the pleasures of fly fishing, logging, cribbage, and family. By turns raunchy and elegiac, these superb tales express, in Maclean's own words, "a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by." Though he grew up in the first decades of the twentieth century in the western Rockies working summers in logging camps and for the US Forest Service and cultivating a lifelong passion for the dry fly it was only at the age of seventy, as a retired English professor, that Norman Maclean discovered what he was meant to do: write. Moving and profound, A River Runs through It honors the literary legacy of a man who improbably gave voice to an essential corner of the American soul. "I am haunted by waters," Maclean writes at the close of A River Runs through It. So, now, are we all.

The"Splendid Heritage"catalog of American Indian artifacts represents the commitment of American collectors to share the beauty and significance of hundreds of ethnographic treasures with a worldwide audience. Originally exhibited as the"Akicita Collection"at the Southwest Museum and as"Splendid Heritage"at the Wheelwright and Eiteljorg Museums, the expanded collection of artifacts was on display at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts fromFebruary 10, 2009 to January 3, 2010. This catalog became a reality through the thoughtful, collaborative efforts of John and Marva Warnock and several collectors of rare and unusual artifacts, the majority of which were produced by Plains and Eastern Woodlands cultures. Their passionate respect and attention to detail is reflected in descriptions and provenance for every artifact, presented in magnificent full-page color images and accompanied by essays from internationally recognized scholars and curators. The contributors celebrate the artifacts not merely for their singular qualities as fine art, but also for their significance in the religious and political lives of their original owners."
