Robert Silverberg

Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels, complete with original illustrations. The first novel is by sci-fi veteran, Milton Lesser. "Jungle in the Sky" is about hunting big game (alien big game) on far-off Ganymede. They were deep space hunters, and their job was to bring back the rarest and most exotic creatures the distant planets had to offer. They searched for their prey from one end of the solar system to the other. From the hot surface of Mercury to the frozen wastelands of Uranus. The prize catch of these alien creatures were the wild anthrovacs, who roamed freely on the surface of far-off Ganymede. These were the creatures the hunters wanted the most-though not as badly as the anthrovacs wanted the hunters The second novel, "Recalled to Life" is by one of sci-fi's best known authors, Robert Silverberg. It deals with bring the dead back to life. It was the supreme irony. Humanity, apparently, feared being recalled to life more than it feared death itself. When Harker joined the little group of scientists, he didn't realize the problems he would face. Their discovery made it possible to revive corpses to full, healthy life. They thought the world would welcome it as the greatest boon of all time. Instead, the world fought them, bitterly and savagely. Bewildered, they could find no way to fight back. The problem was Harker's to solve, and there seemed to be only one answer... Harker himself had to die

Beginning in 1095, Christianity and Islam clashed repeatedly over a 200-year period in the Middle East, in the series of wars we call The Crusades. This era saw naked scheming, selfish grabs for power, treachery of all kinds, and horrific battles--and also many examples of nobility, heroism, and faith on both sides. Robert Silverberg, writing as Franklin Hamilton, brings alive the human participants in these wars, and demonstrates why they remain so strikingly relevant to the political situation of our modern-day world.

When Edward the Confessor, King of England, died in January 1066 without an obvious heir to the throne, his death precipated two invasions of England and a series of battles for the crown by three men: King Harold II of England, King Harold Hardrada of Norway, and Duke William of Normandy (later King William I of England). The outcome determined the course of western civilization for a thousand years to come. Robert Silverberg, writing under the name Franklin Hamilton, brings alive the human participants of the conflict, making them relevant to the modern-day world.

Welcome to Urban Monad 116. Reaching nearly two miles into the sky, the one thousand stories of this building are home to over eight hundred thousand people living in peace and harmony. In the year 2381 with a world population of over seventy-five billion souls, the massive Urbmon system is humanity's salvation. Life in Urbmon 116 is highly regulated, life is cherished, and the culture of procreation is seen as the highest pinnacle of god's plan. Conflict is abhorred, and any who disturb the peace face harsh punishment--even being sent "down the chute" to be recycled as fertilizer. Jason Quevedo, a historian, searches records of the twentieth century hoping to find the root of his discontent with the perfection of Urbmon life. Siegmund Kluver, a young and ambitious administrator, strives to reach the top levels of the Urbmon's government and discovers the civilization's dark truths. Michael Statler, a computer engineer, harbors a forbidden desire. He dreams of leaving the building--of walking in the open air and visiting the far-off sea. This is a dream he must keep secret. If anyone were to find out, he'd face the worst punishment imaginable. The World Inside is a fascinating exploration of society and what makes us human, told by a master of speculative fiction. The World Inside is a 1971 Hugo Award Nominee for Best Novella.

With a new introduction by author Robert Silverberg, and the first-ever map of Borthan, this classic sci-fi novel A Time of Changes, out of print since 1992, will delight fans of dystopian fiction In the far future, Earth is a worn-out backwater and humanity is spread across the galaxy on worlds that began as colonies, but now feel like home, each with its own long history of a thousand years or more, and each with its own unique culture. One of the strangest is on Borthan, where the founding settlers established the Covenant, which teaches that the self is to be despised, and forbids anyone to reveal his innermost thoughts or feelings to another. On Borthan, the filthiest obscenities imaginable are the words "I" and "me." For the heinous crime of "self-baring," apostates have always paid with exile or death, but after his eyes are opened by a visitor from Earth, Kinnall Darival, prince of Salla, risks everything to teach his people the real meaning of being human.
