Astronomy Through the Ages

Astronomy Through the Ages

When astronomers today look up at the night sky they picture a spectacular and infinite universe--full of pulsars, quasars, and black holes and ruled by arcane laws of space and time. Once, ancient astronomers looked up and saw only points of light tracing calm movements across the heavens. But they too were moved to wonder about the meaning of what they saw. In Astronomy through the Ages, Sir Robert Wilson tells the story of how our understanding of the universe has evolved through history--of how the sedate and stable star field of ancient times has been replaced by the vast and explosive universe we know today. Wilson, one of the most distinguished astronomers of the twentieth century, begins by tracing the astronomical studies of the ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, and Greeks and reviews important early contributions from India, China, and the Islamic world. He explains the development of the sun-centered model of the universe in Renaissance Europe. He then tells how the development of the telescope, photography, and spectroscopy pushed back the limits of the observable universe and eventually brought astronomy into the twentieth century. Finally, he describes the rapid advances in radio and space astronomy and other methods over the past fifty years that have ushered in a new "golden age" of astronomy. These advances have not only allowed observation of deep space but also enabled scientists to unlock the secrets of the universe itself from its origin to its possible fate. Wilson himself has played an important role in these discoveries as the developer of one of the most successful astronomical satellites ever launched, the International Ultraviolet Explorer. While focusing on the human side of astronomical discovery, Wilson also provides readers with a basic understanding of difficult concepts, explaining relativity and quantum mechanics without using technical language or mathematics. Remarkable in its scope and clarity,Astronomy through the Ages provides an accessible view of historical discoveries and modern advances and shows why excitement about astronomy is even greater today than when Galileo first gazed in wonder at the rings of Saturn. Originally published in 1998. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Sevillan sokea mies on mestarillinen teos. Wilsonin luomat vahvat henkilöhahmot, autenttiset miljöökuvaukset ja koko ajan läsnä oleva jännitys tekevät kirjan lukemisesta suuren nautinnon. Santa semana, hiljainen viikko, saa Sevillassa traagisen käänteen.

As rigorous as it is sumptuous, the work of Roger Ferris + Partners blends high style and modernist principles. This is the firm's first monograph. From family houses to historic restorations, hotels, and high-tech office spaces - the architectural firm of Roger Ferris + Partners has pursued uncommonly diverse projects at vastly different scales, all with an approach to design that synthesizes imagination and logic. Whether a 1,500-square-foot house on a narrow lot overlooking Long Island Sound, or the Royal Bank of Scotland’s US headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut - with a six-story glazed atrium and a “courtyard in the sky” on the roof of its two-story trading floor - a building that is “well conceived and artfully executed, cannot help but be beautiful.” Among Ferris’ major projects are a golf clubhouse that has turned a conservative typology on its ear with bladelike forms inspired by a racing engine turbine, and a partially sunken service entrance in which impresario Robert Wilson has staged theatrical productions. A design for a restaurant includes not only a central, glass-enclosed kitchen elevated 18 inches above the floor, but an art installation that periodically projects scrolling text on the dining room wall. In every project, the fulfillment of the client’s functional needs is rendered in the most elemental and legible way, resulting in both formal elegance and dramatic power.

A father follows his runaway daughter into a world of crime and espionage in this thriller by "one of the more sophisticated writers in his field" (Kirkus Reviews). Amy Boxer, the precocious, frustrated daughter of kidnap consultant Charles Boxer and DI Mercy Danquah, has decided on drastic action: she's leaving home. But Amy can't just walk out. First she goads her parents with a challenge: YOU WILL NEVER FIND ME. Amy's destination: Madrid. Here, in the strobe lights of bars and crowded dance clubs, she's anonymous and untraceable. Except to a volatile, unpredictable leader in the city's drug trade, the man known only as El Osito. Boxer will use his very specific set of skills to retrace Amy's quickly vanishing steps. Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Danquah has her own missing person case in London: the young son of a retired Russian secret service agent who's trying to learn who poisoned his colleague, Alexander Tereshchenko. As the detective begins her search, a body is found in Madrid. And Amy's father may be the next target . . . The Gold Dagger Award-winning author of A Small Death in Lisbon "demonstrates, as Graham Greene did long ago, that thrillers are the liveliest, most gripping, most thought-provoking literary enterprises going today" (Los Angeles Times Book Review). "Few writers--in any genre--can match Wilson's depth of character and plot or his evocation of place."--The Boston Globe
