The Northern Ireland experience of conflict and agreement presents a salutary warning to the international community against the fashionable view that there is an 'Irish model' which can be exported to cauterise ethnic troubles around the globe. The book draws on extensive archive research in London and Dublin on the 1970s power-sharing experiment, and on interviews with senior officials and political figures from the two capitals-as well as reconciliation practitioners-about the negotiation and chequered implementation of the Belfast agreement. It shows how stereotyped conceptions of the problem as a product of 'ancient hatreds', allied to solutions based on Realpolitik, have failed to transform Northern Ireland from a fragile peace, following the exhaustion of protracted paramilitary campaigns, to genuine reconciliation. The book concludes with practical proposals for constitutional reforms which would favour genuine power-sharing-rather than merely sharing power out-and set Northern Ireland on the road to the 'normal', civic society its long-suffering residents desire. It will be essential reading not only for academics and postgraduates interested in ethnic conflict but also for policy-makers who confront it in practice.

Can one prove that 1 + 1 = 2? How long is the coastline of Britain? Which US president proved Pythagoras' theorem on right-angled triangles? Who originated the quadratic equation we learned at school? In how many ways can you tile your bathroom? Is there a formula for prime numbers? How often are two winning lottery numbers consecutive? Who was the witch of Agnesi? What is 'the most important theorem in mathematics'? Who scratched mathematical equations on a Dublin bridge? What is a 'space-filling curve'? Must all infinities be the same size? These and many other questions are answered in this book which presents eighteen 'Stories' featuring famous mathematical equations and their historical development. The equations arise from geometry, arithmetic, algebra, calculus, combinatorics, number theory, and mathematical logic, and range over 4,000 years from early counting and circle measurement via Renaissance algebra to fractal geometry, and from the geometry of the ancient Greeks via the development of calculus to Boolean algebra and computing. The Stories are well illustrated with historical artefacts and explanatory diagrams. Presented in a straightforward, intelligible, and entertaining manner, Sum Stories is written for general readers of all ages with an interest in mathematics and its historical development.

Who is God Now? Hope in God after Betrayal is for the woman whose heart has been shattered by her husband's unfaithfulness, infidelity, pornography use, emotional affairs, addictions, or any other cause of marital betrayal, and who seeks a Biblical context for both suffering and hope. God's attributes come into sharp focus in a practical and Biblically accurate manner, drawn from the author's own experiences of healing from the unthinkable. The author meditates on who God is, shares examples from Scripture, and offers realistic ways the reader can apply this knowledge to her own life. Who is God Now? Hope in God after Betrayal describes truths and characteristics of God, offering to be a springboard to a new, flourishing relationship with Jesus Christ that will help to carry the reader through and beyond her own devastating journey and recovery. Endorsement: When Robin Wilson experienced her own personal "D-Day" due to her husband's infidelity, she armed herself with God's Word to fight courageously to save her marriage. Her book chronicles her journey through the highs and lows of remaining faithful to God's calling. A must-read providing hope for those who have endured betrayal.-Josh D. McDowell, authorAbout the Authors: Robin Wilson has been there, and has asked, "Why?" "How?" and "Who are You, Lord?" Robin began to understand God's character in new ways as He walked her through the trauma of marital betrayal, and began healing her heart. On that journey, Robin experienced and learned to understand Our Lord's love, trustworthiness, and healing firsthand. Now, her heart's desire is to share the truth of God's character with women who also are on the journey of recovery from betrayal and searching for their own answers. A middle school English teacher for 20+ years, Christy Bottom not only is skilled at encouraging others to excel in their writing, but she also is an accomplished author of works published in several literary magazines and newspapers. Christy's most important work, however, is sharing the hopeful and heartening news of the Gospel with others. Christy is a wife, mother, teacher, and avid reader, who enjoys regular Bible study, travel, and time with her family.

Graph Theory in America

Graph Theory in America

How a new mathematical field grew and matured in America Graph Theory in America focuses on the development of graph theory in North America from 1876 to 1976. At the beginning of this period, James Joseph Sylvester, perhaps the finest mathematician in the English-speaking world, took up his appointment as the first professor of mathematics at the Johns Hopkins University, where his inaugural lecture outlined connections between graph theory, algebra, and chemistry—shortly after, he introduced the word graph in our modern sense. A hundred years later, in 1976, graph theory witnessed the solution of the long-standing four color problem by Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken of the University of Illinois. Tracing graph theory’s trajectory across its first century, this book looks at influential figures in the field, both familiar and less known. Whereas many of the featured mathematicians spent their entire careers working on problems in graph theory, a few such as Hassler Whitney started there and then moved to work in other areas. Others, such as C. S. Peirce, Oswald Veblen, and George Birkhoff, made excursions into graph theory while continuing their focus elsewhere. Between the main chapters, the book provides short contextual interludes, describing how the American university system developed and how graph theory was progressing in Europe. Brief summaries of specific publications that influenced the subject’s development are also included. Graph Theory in America tells how a remarkable area of mathematics landed on American soil, took root, and flourished.

The History of Mathematics: A Source-Based Approach, Volume 2

AMERICAN MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY

The History of Mathematics: A Source-Based Approach is a comprehensive history of the development of mathematics. This, the second volume of a two-volume set, takes the reader from the invention of the calculus to the beginning of the twentieth century. The initial discoverers of calculus are given thorough investigation, and special attention is also paid to Newton's Principia. The eighteenth century is presented as primarily a period of the development of calculus, particularly in differential equations and applications of mathematics. Mathematics blossomed in the nineteenth century and the book explores progress in geometry, analysis, foundations, algebra, and applied mathematics, especially celestial mechanics. The approach throughout is markedly historiographic: How do we know what we know? How do we read the original documents? What are the institutions supporting mathematics? Who are the people of mathematics? The reader learns not only the history of mathematics, but also how to think like a historian. The two-volume set was designed as a textbook for the authors' acclaimed year-long course at the Open University. It is, in addition to being an innovative and insightful textbook, an invaluable resource for students and scholars of the history of mathematics. The authors, each among the most distinguished mathematical historians in the world, have produced over fifty books and earned scholarly and expository prizes from the major mathematical societies of the English-speaking world.

The History of Mathematics: A Source-Based Approach is a comprehensive history of the development of mathematics. The first volume of the two-volume set takes readers from the beginning of counting in prehistory to 1600 and the threshold of the discovery of calculus. It is notable for the extensive engagement with original-primary and secondary-source material. The coverage is worldwide, and embraces developments, including education, in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, China, India, the Islamic world and Europe. The emphasis on astronomy and its historical relationship to mathematics is new, and the presentation of every topic is informed by the most recent scholarship in the field. Number theory is the branch of mathematics that is primarily concerned with the counting numbers. Of particular importance are the prime numbers, the 'building blocks' of our number system. The subject is an old one, dating back over two millennia to the ancient Greeks, and for many years has been studied for its intrinsic beauty and elegance, not least because several of its challenges are so easy to state that everyone can understand them, and yet no-one has ever been able to resolve them. But number theory has also recently become of great practical importance - in the area of cryptography, where the security of your credit card, and indeed of the nation's defence, depends on a result concerning prime numbers that dates back to the 18th century. Recent years have witnessed other spectacular developments, such as Andrew Wiles's proof of 'Fermat's last theorem' (unproved for over 250 years) and some exciting work on prime numbers. In this Very Short Introduction Robin Wilson introduces the main areas of classical number theory, both ancient and modern. Drawing on the work of many of the greatest mathematicians of the past, such as Euclid, Fermat, Euler, and Gauss, he situates some of the most interesting and creative problems in the area in their historical context. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

God Is With Us, originally published in 2016, invites you to explore your longing for God's presence through a study of the lectionary Bible readings for Advent and Christmas. The hope of Advent is the fulfillment of that longing; we await the coming of Jesus as Immanuel, God With Us. Each week's Scriptures call us to praise God as we actively await the coming of Christ and prepare our hearts and lives for his arrival. Through the readings, we hear the invitation to claim and celebrate the new hope we have in Jesus Christ. The season of Advent offers opportunities to prepare for God's coming in human form in the infant Jesus and for the fulfillment of God's kingdom with the second coming of Christ. Hope is the focus of Advent worship, study, and prayer. We will discover the light that began in the manger, which continues as we look forward with hope to Christ's return. God Is With Us is based on the Revised Common Lectionary Scriptures for church year A, the first of a three-year cycle of Bible readings. The study includes commentary and reflection on readings from the Old Testament, the Gospels, and the Epistles. It offers the opportunity to explore these Bible readings in a five-session study. It will help participants understand, appreciate, and engage in meaningful and joyous celebrations of Advent and Christmas and to live each day in God's hope through Jesus Christ.
