Where Did Mommy Go? is a story for children created by a dad, Roger Clarke, and his sons, Zachary and Aidan. They had many questions after their loving mother, Kristen Clarke, who never relented in her battle, succumbed to her illness with Ovarian Cancer at the young age of thirty-five. She left behind her cherished boys, ages seven and five, as well as her loving husband. The boys, always curious with their immediate surroundings, heard from many people their mother could take many shapes in nature. They became intrigued with the idea she watched over them, visited them, and lived all around them. Both children loved how they experienced her presence in the beauty of their surroundings. Kristen made sure Zachary and Aidan understood and felt the wonders of nature as the family enjoyed the outdoors together. These are the questions the boys asked and the answers their father gave in response.

Ghosts: A Natural History: 500 Years of Searching for Proof
A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice A comprehensive, authoritative and readable history of the evolution of the ghost in the west, examining the behavior of the subject in its preferred environment: the stories we tell each other. "Roger Clarke tells this the story that inspired Henry James' The Turn of the Screw] and many other gloriously weird stories with real verve, and also a kind of narrative authority that tends to constrain the skeptical voice within... An] erudite and richly entertaining book." --New York Times Book Review No matter how rationally we order our lives, few of us are completely immune to the suggestion of the uncanny and the fear of the dark. What explains sightings of ghosts? Why do they fascinate us? What exactly do those who have been haunted see? What did they believe? And what proof is there? Taking us through the key hauntings that have obsessed the world, from the true events that inspired Henry James's classic The Turn of the Screw right up to the present day, Roger Clarke unfolds a story of class conflict, charlatans, and true believers. The cast list includes royalty and prime ministers, Samuel Johnson, John Wesley, Harry Houdini, and Adolf Hitler. The chapters cover everything from religious beliefs to modern developments in neuroscience, the medicine of ghosts, and the technology of ghosthunting. There are haunted WWI submarines, houses so blighted by phantoms they are demolished, a seventeenth-century Ghost Hunter General, and the emergence of the Victorian flash mob, where hundreds would stand outside rumored sites all night waiting to catch sight of a dead face at a window. Written as grippingly as the best ghost fiction, A Natural History of Ghosts takes us on an unforgettable hunt through the most haunted places of the last five hundred years and our longing to believe.

Buyer Power and Competition in European Food Retailing

Buyer Power and Competition in European Food Retailing

In this book, leading experts in the field examine the effects of the recent growth in concentration in the European food retailing sector. In particular, the book develops a number of buyer power propositions and builds on the previous work of several of the authors, to consider how the growth of large supermarket chains affects competition in food retailing. The authors outline the theoretical and policy analysis underpinning the work and assess evidence on the size and growth of supermarket chains across the EU. Whilst not entirely critical, they suggest that there is strong evidence in some countries that supermarkets use their buying power to impose unfair terms and conditions on suppliers, particularly affecting small suppliers. The authors use case studies, to provide an in-depth analysis of four European countries, namely France, Germany, Spain and the UK. The book ends with a discussion of policy issues against a backdrop of likely future trends in concentration in this area. Academics working in the areas of microeconomics and industrial economics as well as those involved in European competition policy more generally, such as lawyers, civil servants and consultancy groups, will find this volume enlightening.
Monopoly Policy in the UK

Monopoly Policy in the UK

Roger Clarke; Stephen Davies; Nigel Driffield

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd
1998
sidottu
This book investigates monopoly policy in the UK from 1973-1995 using all of the monopoly cases which the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) reported on during this period. It provides a rigorous analysis of 14 detailed case studies, and focuses specifically on those cases where the MMC sought to introduce change through price controls, termination of anti-competitive practices or divestment. It assesses how effective such measures have been in combating problems such as monopoly pricing, collusion, predatory and discriminatory pricing and different forms of vertical restraint. From the evidence, the authors discuss the strengths and weaknesses of current policy and examine the scope for reform. This book will be of interest to students and researchers interested in competition policy, industrial organisation, the British economy and business strategy.
