The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Interfaces, Quantum Wells and Superlattices" was held from August 16th to 29th, 1987, in Banff, Alberta, Canada. This volume contains most of the lectures that were given at the Institute. A few of the lectures had already been presented at an earlier meeting and appear instead in the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics and Applications of Quantum Wells and Super lattices" held in Erice from April 21st to May 1st earlier in the year and published by Plenum Press. The study of semiconductor interfaces, quantum wells and super­ lattices has come to represent a substantial proportion of all work in condensed matter physics. In a sense the growth of interest in this area, which began to accelerate about 10 years ago and seems to be continuing, has been driven by technological developments. While the older generation of semiconductor devices was based on adjacent semiconductors with different properties (e. g. different doping levels) separated by interfaces, modern semiconductor devices tend to be based more and more on properties of the interfaces themselves. This has led, as an example, to the field of band-structure engineering. Improved understanding of the fundamental physics of these systems has aided technological developments and, in turn, technological developments have made available systems which exhibit novel and fascinating phYSical properties, such as the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects.

This text concentrates upon field observations concerning leached cappings and gossans, occurring as oxidised surface expressions of underlying ore zones. Although the advent of modern multielement geochemical sampling and easier mechanical excavation assist considerably in subsurface interpretation, there are still many occasions where the first observation and recognition are made by the lone field geologist. New exposures continue to be found in remote and often difficult terrains, where “on the spot” skills are of prime importance. In general terms the text has been arranged from the broad scale to the specific, and it should be realised that all scales provide valuable input for final interpretation. Tis text has resulted from some forty years of experience during which the author has puzzled over the meaning of ore textures. Te learning process has been slow and is still incomplete. Te bemusement began directly upon leaving the academic confnes, which in retrospect lef one keen young geologist very ill-equipped to interpret the mineralising process via feld or hand lens style observation of the rocks. Enlightenment has proceeded via a series of events:- 1. Te slow process of feld observation as an industry-based mine and exploration geologist. 2. Te opportunity to visit numerous diferent styles of ore deposit both as an academic and consultant. 3. Te need to answer questions from several generations of enquiring students. 4. Te privilege of being able to conduct research. 5. Te good fortune to be associated with a few top class economic geologists who actually knew what they were doing! Professor Willard C. Lacy deserves the most credit for quietly demonstrating the value of frst principles concerning fuid channelways, combined with an ability to look properly at the t- tures. Despite rapid technological advances this skill remains fundamental both to the practi- ing exploration geologist and to the academic researcher who is interested in understanding ore forming processes. Te fve volumes comprising this presentation were originally compiled individually over a period of eleven years, and aimed to progressively guide the observer though the principles of recogn-i tion concerning infll, alteration, overprinting, and fnally to ore-related breccias.

Long before he published Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson ("Lewis Carroll" to the world) took up photography as a hobby. Together with the related nanotubes, they hold the promise of providing new materials with novel chemical and solid state properties. The cost of the basic fullerenes is now such that research into them is feasible for very many chemists. This book describes the fundamental aspects of fullerene chemistry. Following brief background on the discovery, basic fullerene nomenclature, and relevant properties (including those of endohedral fullerenes and nanotubes), there are chapters describing the rules governing the addition patterns, and each of the reaction types with representative examples. Leading references are given to key papers describing individual reactions and phenomena.
