This book traces the re-emergence of nationalism in the media, popular culture and politics, and the normalization of far-right nativist ideologies and attitudes in Austria between 1995 and 2015, within the framework of Critical Discourse Studies. In doing so, it brings together a range of theoretical and empirical approaches to identity politics, contemporary popular culture, far-right populism and commemoration. While contradictory yet intertwined tendencies towards renationalization and transnationalization have often framed debates about European identities, the so-called refugee crisis of 2015 intensified and polarized these debates. The COVID-19 pandemic, as another major crisis, saw nation-states react by closing borders, while symbols of banal nationalism proliferated. The data under discussion here, drawn from a variety of empirical studies, suggest that changes in memory politics—the way past events are collectively remembered and tied into current political discourses—are also linked to the dynamics of migration; the influence of financial and climate crises; changing gender politics; and a new transnational European politics of the past. Accordingly, the authors assess current challenges to liberal democracies, as well as fundamental human and constitutional rights, in relation to new trends of renationalization across Europe and beyond.

Die Kinder kommunistischer und/oder jüdischer Eltern, die aus Exilländern und Konzentrationslagern in ihre Heimat zurückgekehrt waren um ein neues demokratisches Österreich aufzubauen, lebten – geprägt von den Schicksalen und Erfahrungen ihrer Eltern – in einer speziellen gesellschaftlichen Randgruppe im reaktionär-katholischen Klima Österreichs. Trotz unterschiedlichster individueller Lebenswege, die vom Rand in die Mitte der Gesellschaft geführt haben, wirkt die Zusammengehörigkeit bis heute fort und führt zu regelmäßig wiederkehrenden Treffen: die „Kinderjause“ – das sind ca. 200 Personen, geboren zwischen 1939 und 1953. In diesem Kreis und im Kreis ihrer Kinder wurden Interviews mit 40 Personen geführt, um den Umgang mit der Geschichte der verfolgten und vertriebenen Eltern und der Weitergabe an die nächste Generation aus diskursanalytischer und psychotherapeutischer Perspektive nachzuzeichnen. Dieser Forschungsansatz holt einen bisher verborgenen Ausschnitt der österreichischen Gesellschaft ans Tageslicht und leistet gleichzeitig einen Beitrag zum Diskurs über Trauma und Resilienz, über Vergessen und Erinnern.

How do we construct national identities in discourse? Which topics, which discursive strategies and which linguistic devices are employed to construct national sameness and uniqueness on the one hand, and differences to other national collectives on the other hand? The Discursive Construction of National Identity analyses discourses of national identity in Europe with particular attention to Austria. In the tradition of critical discourse analysis, the authors analyse current and on-going transformations in the self-and other definition of national identities using an innovative interdisciplinary approach which combines discourse-historical theory and methodology and political science perspectives. Thus, the rhetorical promotion of national identification and the discursive construction and reproduction of national difference on public, semi-public and semi-private levels within a nation state are analysed in much detail and illustrated with a huge amount of examples taken from many genres (speeches, focus-groups, interviews, media, and so forth). In addition to the critical discourse analysis of multiple genres accompanying various commemorative and celebratory events in 1995, this extended and revised edition is able to draw comparisons with similar events in 2005. The impact of socio-political changes in Austria and in the European Union is also made transparent in the attempts of constructing hegemonic national identities.
