Contemporary art is multiform by nature and is constantly renewing itself. This sets a challenge for the museum: how to track and collect something that is perpetually changing? The Kiasma Collection Book celebrates the active role the Museum of Contemporary Art has had as a collector of contemporary art for more than three decades. Kiasma's collection forms a part of the national cultural heritage and is one of the most significant collections of contemporary art in Northern Europe. It captures the present moment of art, also for future generations. The Collection Book sheds light on different aspects of contemporary art as well as on Kiasma's collections through a rich selection of images and six articles by experts.

Henkistymisen teemojen lisäksi näyttelyn teokset kysyvät inhimillisen tiedon ja kuvittelukykymme rajoja./The Coexistence exhibition catalogue looks at the relationship between humans and the environment. How is nature presented in contemporary art? And how are humans interpreted as relating to other species? Environmental issues, ecology, and human coexistence with other organisms are topics of long-standing interest in art, but in the 2000s these themes have come into sharper focus. The exhibition also visits the world of sacred rituals, reflecting on how humans could deepen their bond with the nonhuman world. While contemplating the theme of neo-spirituality, the exhibition poses questions about the limits of human knowledge and imagination.

Hullu rakkaus -kirja esittelee kokoelman suurelle yleisölle. “Come with an open mind. And crying is allowed!” This is how art collector Seppo Fränti introduces his life's work: a colourful art collection, in which abstract minimalism goes hand in hand with powerful expressionism. This book tells Fränti's life story through the art that he has amassed: how he became a collector and how art has affected his life. The collection says much about Fränti's close friendships with the artists, whom he cannot separate from their artworks. “This is where we have eaten and drunk together, and that is the rug on which many have slept,” Fränti reveals. Now treasures from Fränti's sprawling private collection have been donated to the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. Mad Love presents the Seppo Fränti Collection to the public.

A Dream in Four Colours collection exhibition at Kiasma 27.2.2026–10.1.2027. A Dream in Four Colours represents one possible perspective on the Finnish National Gallery's contemporary art collection, which is itself a continually evolving repository of works. The exhibition is about looking and seeing – about tentative exploration and careful reflection – it is not intended to offer easy certainties or fixed meanings. This exhibition is a showcase for the kind of unruly offshoots and flourishes of thought that emerge through art, and it reminds us not to expect flawlessness from the collection from which it derives; there will always be ruptures and interruptions.

Kiasman kokoelmakirja juhlistaa Nykytaiteen museo Kiasman aktiivista roolia nykytaiteen kerääjänä yli kolmen vuosikymmenen aikana.

Printed matters: merkitysten kerroksia -kirjan seitsemän kirjoittajaa pohtivat artikkeleissaan taidegrafiikan olomuotoja.

Divergencies of Perception

Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) has been known as the philosopher of painting. His interest in the theory of perception intertwined with the questions concerning the artist s perception, the experience of an artwork and the possible interpretations of the artwork. For him, aesthetics was not a sub-field of philosophy, and art was not simply a subject matter for the aesthetic experience, but a form of thinking. This study proposes an opening for a dialogue between Merleau-Pontian phenomenology and contemporary art. The thesis examines his phenomenology through certain works of contemporary art and presents readings of these artworks through his phenomenology. The thesis both shows the potentiality of a method, but also engages in the critical task of finding the possible limitations of his approach. The first part lays out the methodological and conceptual points of departure of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological approach to perception as well as the features that determined his discussion on encountering art. Merleau-Ponty referred to the experience of perceiving art using the notion of seeing with (voir selon). He stressed a correlative reciprocity described in Eye and Mind (1961) as the switching of the roles of the visible and the painter. The choice of artworks is motivated by certain restrictions in the phenomenological readings of visual arts. The examined works include paintings by Tiina Mielonen, a photographic work by Christian Mayer, a film by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, and an installation by Monika Sosnowska. These works resonate with, and challenge, his phenomenological approach. The chapters with case studies take up different themes that are central to Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology: space, movement, time, and touch. All of the themes are interlinked with the examined artworks. There are also topics that reappear in the thesis, such as the notion of écart and the question of encountering the other. As Merleau-Ponty argued, the sphere of art has a particular capability to address our being in the world. The thesis presents an interpretation that emphasises the notion of ecart, which refers to an experience of divergence or dispossession. The sudden dissociation, surprise or rupture that is needed in order for a meeting between the spectator and the artwork, or between two persons, to be possible. Further, the thesis suggests that through artworks it is possible to take into consideration the ecart, the divergence, that defines our subjectivity.
