Progress which has been made in our knowledge of Northern Buddhism during the last few years is due very considerably to the discovery of the Buddhist literature of China. This literature contains, amongst other valuable works, the records of the travels of various Chinese Buddhist pilgrims who visited India during the early centuries of our era. This is Volume II in a series of sixteen about Buddhism. Originally published in 1984, this volume offers a translation from Chinese of Hiuen Tsiang of A. D. 629 of the 'Si-Yu-Ki'.

This is Volume IV of sixteen in the Oriental series on Buddhism. First published in 1878, this book includes texts from the Buddhist Canon or 'Dhammapada' with narratives. Dhammapada may be rendered Scriptural texts or verses includes, authentic Texts gathered from ancient canonical books-that are generally connected with some incident or other in the History of Buddha, helping to illustrate everyday life in India at the time when they were written, as well as the method of teaching adopted by the founder of tis religion.

Buddha’s Dhammapada is a widely read scripture among the Buddhist followers. It plays a similar role as the Bible to Christianity, Gita to Hindus, Guru Granth Sahib to Sikhs, Torah to the Jews, and the Quran to the Muslims. The original version is contained in Khuddaka Nikaya, which is part of the Pali Theravada Buddhist Canons. Though Dham­mapada was composed around the third century bce, its traditions date back to the first century ce. It contains the sayings of Buddha in different situations, both to the monastic orders and others.
