Samuel Laing kom fra Orknøyene, og gjennomførte i 1838 en fire måneder lang reise gjennom Sverige. Blant stedene han besøkte var Umeå, Degerfors, Sundsvall, Gävle, Karlstad, Västerås og Stockholm. Laing hadde ingenting å utsette på menneskene han møtte under sin reise, men på grunnlag av statistikk som viste at tre av ti barn i Stockholm var født utenfor ekteskap, konkluderte han i boken med at svensker var et svært umoralsk folk. Som britisk liberaler hadde han også mye å utsette på det svenske aristokratiet og dets privilegier, som stemte dårlig overens med hans idealer om demokratiske samfunn i utvikling og vekst. Da boken kom ut, førte den til en skarp ordveksling mellom den svenske ambassadøren i London, Björnstjärna, og Laing selv.
