Regional variations in public welfare provision have been the cause of some of the most heated debates about the public service sector. Very often, the geographical factors inherent in these anomalies are ignored. First published in 1989, The Geography of Public Welfare Provision (now with a new preface by the author) shows just how important these factors are and introduces the reader to a crucial aspect of Britain’s welfare service system. Comparing the variable patterns of welfare we observe in the population with the service provision made by local authorities and other agencies, Sarah Curtis considers how far these are fair and equitable. She examines the socio-geographical characteristics of groups of people who are most vulnerable in society, and most likely to need to use services, focusing especially on three groups: the elderly, the young, and ethnic minorities. Exploring the restructuring of the welfare system of the time, the book charts how this affected the relationship between public, private, and voluntary sectors of welfare service provision. With information drawn from extensive research, The Geography of Public Welfare Provision provides a detailed account of the British welfare system relevant to students and local authority policy makers in Britain and many other countries.

Born in a Dust Bowl dugout on the hard, flat plains outside Lubbock, Texas, Sonny Curtis picked cotton as a kid, formed a band with his high school friend Buddy Holly, and opened shows for Elvis - and that was just by the age of twenty-two. Now at the end of his long career, Curtis is considered a rock 'n' roll trailblazer. He toured the world with the Crickets and with Waylon Jennings. He wrote the classic songs 'I Fought the Law,' 'Love Is All Around' (the theme song to The Mary Tyler Moore Show), and the country standard 'I'm No Stranger to the Rain.' Curtis has left an impression on American myth and music that has gone heretofore undocumented. But to the author, Sonny was a loving if cryptic father as elusive as the spotlight itself. Part biography, part memoir, Daughter of a Song braids together an insider's perspective on an outsider's life. With Sonny out on the road for long stretches, Sarah Curtis pieced his life and legacy together through research and recollection, following her father from the 1950s birth of rock 'n' roll in West Texas to the 1960s Hollywood scene where Sonny met his wife, a Vietnam War protester and California hippie. The two of them would leave Hollywood behind for the rural Tennessee cattle farm where they raised Sarah. With vivid storytelling, cultural commentary, lyrical prose, and a dose of humor, Daughter of a Song considers the complexities of fate and fame, the cultures we shape and the ones that shape us. It is the story of a man saved by art, and the daughter who must navigate to the center of his creativity to reckon with her own.

And all too soon, their on-screen romance turned into a real-life love story-juicy enough to have social media exploding and land Victoria and Nate on the covers of tabloid magazines. There is a strong case today for a specific focus on mental public health and its relation to social and physical environments. From a public health perspective, we now appreciate the enormous significance of mental distress and illness as causes of disability and impairment. Stress and anxiety, and other mental illnesses are linked to risks in the environment. This book questions how and why the social and physical environment matters for mental health and psychological wellbeing in human populations. While putting forward a number of different points of view, there is a particular emphasis on ideas and research from health geography, which conceptualises space and place in ways that provide a distinctive focus on the interactions between people and their social and physical environment. The book begins with an overview of a rich body of theory and research from sociology, psychology, social epidemiology, social psychiatry and neuroscience, considering arguments concerning 'mind-body dualism', and presenting a conceptual framework for studying how attributes of 'space' and 'place' are associated with human mental wellbeing. It goes on to look in detail at how our mental health is associated with material, or physical, aspects of our environment (such as 'natural' and built landscapes), with social environments (involving social relationships in communities), and with symbolic and imagined spaces (representing the personal, cultural and spiritual meanings of places). These relationships are shown to be complex, with potential to be beneficial or hazardous for mental health. The final chapters of the book consider spaces of care and the implications of space and place for public mental health policy, offering a broader view of how mental health might be improved at the population level. With boxed case studies of specific research ideas and methods, chapter summaries and suggestions for introductory reading, this book offers a comprehensive introduction which will be valuable for students of health geography, public health, sociology and anthropology of health and illness. It also provides an interdisciplinary review of the literature, by the author and by other writers, to frame a discussion of issues that challenge more advanced researchers in these fields.
