I sette saggi di cui si compone il libro, nella maggior parte inediti, hanno per tema la decorazione pittorica della chiesa di S. Francesco ad Assisi, a partire dalla prima fase di affrescatura della basilica inferiore fino al ciclo francescano nella navata di quella superiore. Nel loro insieme costituiscono il frutto di piu di venti anni di ricerche dell'autrice, e studiano la veste pittorica della basilica secondo due approcci diversi ma non indipendenti l'uno dall'altro. Il primo e l'analisi della maniera di pittori e botteghe, del mestiere dell'artista e del funzionamento del cantiere: un problema sempre complesso e sempre sfuggente, per la difficolta dell'indagine e la scarsezza di fonti e di informazioni. Ad Assisi ogni tranche della decorazione pittorica ha proprie caratteristiche tecniche, proprie modalita di funzionamento, propri sistemi di organizzazione del lavoro, e il libro ne studia le ricadute sul risultato pittorico finale. Il secondo approccio, o metodo, e l'analisi iconografica. Essa schiude le porte della storia, e ad Assisi piu che altrove. Non si tratta di cercare il significato delle "figure" in un episodio storico, o in una fonte letteraria: quelle figure sono il testo, sono la storia, la fanno e la svelano senza subordinazioni, l'immagine ha una natura complessa che si annida all'interno della storia organica del monumento, preso in una rete di relazioni di cui la figurativita e un aspetto.

This volume presents a new perspective for discussing the European social contract and its main challenges, bringing together single-nation and comparative studies from across Europe. Do we judge the poor? Do we fear them? Do we have a moral obligation to help those in need? The moral and social grounds of solidarity and deservedness in relation to aid for poor people are rarely steady. This is particularly true under contemporary austerity reforms, where current debates question exactly who is most ‘deserving’ of protection in times of crisis. These arguments have accompanied a rise in the production of negative and punitive sentiments towards the poor. This book breaks new ground in the discussion of the moral dimension of poverty and its implications for the treatment of the poor in mature welfare states, drawing upon the diverse political, social and symbolic constructions of deservedness and otherness. It takes a new look at the issue of poverty from the perspective of public policy, media and public opinion. It also examines, in a topical manner, the various ways in which certain factions contribute to the production of stereotyped representations of poverty and to the construction of boundaries between ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ in our society. Nove saggi, quasi due secoli di storia dal primo Trecento, e quindi dall'epoca viscontea, al primo Cinquecento, cioe alla fine dell'epoca e della cultura sforzesca, secondo il filo rosso del rapporto tra la cultura lombarda e l'Antico. Un Antico mai antiquariale, ma sempre rivissuto e rifunzionalizzato nel contesto delle scelte culturali e politiche di una Milano costantemente al centro della vita delle corti in Italia e in Europa. Il volume contiene molte novita. Vari contributi si muovono attorno alla figura di Giovanni Visconti, arcivescovo di Milano e signore della citta dal 1339 al 1354, alla sua committenza, al suo palazzo in Milano, e al ciclo pittorico che ne ornava la grande sala affacciata sul Duomo e che e stato riscoperto e arricchito di molte parti inedite. Frutto di metodi pionieristici e di ricerche sul campo sono gli apporti che rivoluzionano l'immagine della Milano viscontea, e le conoscenze sulla Vigevano di Luchino Visconti. Nella seconda parte del volume e invece di scena la scultura "pisanelliana" dei Da Carona tra Venezia, Milano e Genova, e poi, avanzando nel tempo, i problemi dell'architettura e della decorazione in Bramante, e dei palazzi "all'antica" di fine Quattrocento tra Milano e Venezia. Il volto di Milano tardo-medievale e rinascimentale, e il ruolo della corte viscontea e sforzesca nel quadro della societa cortese in Italia del nord, risultano considerevolmente arricchiti e mutati.

Poverty is not a neutral phenomenon, nor are social inclusion programmes neutrally conceived, designed and implemented. Their ultimate nature is built upon ideas, values, actors, politics and economic constraints. This topical book is one of the first to examine the social and political construction of anti-poverty programmes in Central Eastern Europe and their transformation from communist rule to the current economic crisis.
