The State of England

Despite almost continuous administrative reconfigurations of England by successive UK governments implementing various British nationalist programmes for political, economic and social renewal, there remains no clear vision for the future governance of England. There has been little, if no, engagement with the notions of English identity and England as a nation and a positive case for devolution for England, based on a vision of what England and the English stand for, has not been forthcoming. Simon Lee seeks to address these laments by putting forward a moral vision of England as a political community, based upon a civic nationalism and national identity rooted in the principles of democratic political culture and citizenship. He offers an alternative to the political visions for England based upon the reactionary English nationalism of Enoch Powell, or the elegies to a lost England of Roger Scruton, as well as Tory visions based on notions of “world-beating” British exceptionalism, and ideas of a "New Britain" from the Left based upon a "nations and regions" agenda. In doing so, the book considers some fundamental questions: how England should be governed, nationally and locally; what form its political economy should take, in terms of a written constitution of laws, legislation, policies and regulation to govern its economy, society and environment; and how England’s national and plural local identities should be defined, given voice and represented.

The Intersection of Class and Space in British Postwar Writing
Centering on the British kitchen sink realism movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s, specifically its documentation of the built environment’s influence on class consciousness, this book highlights the settings of a variety of novels, plays, and films, turning to archival research to offer new ways of thinking about how spatial representation in cultural production sustains or intervenes in the process of social stratification. As a movement that used gritty, documentary-style depictions of space to highlight the complexities of working-class life, the period’s texts chronicled shifts in the social and topographic landscape while advancing new articulations of citizenship in response to the failures of post-war reconstruction. By exploring the impact of space on class, this book addresses the contention that critical discourse has overlooked the way the built environment informs class identity.

What if, instead of calling you to leave your job, God called you to donate a percentage of your business proceeds to support His ministries? What if obeying that call required you to walk away from employment with an established, successful business to begin again as an entrepreneur? What if answering that call meant you might go without a salary for four years? In 2004, Simon Lee did receive this call from God. His ten-year journey with Christ leading the company has been amazing. He has not only met God's call to donate 50 percent of his company profits to Christian ministries, but EIS Office Solutions, Inc., has grown from a start-up company into a strong, competitive business. One Company Under God was written to showcase God's faithfulness to our obedience and to invite your company to support God's ministries at home and abroad.

"Okay Tom, you get to choose. What is your favourite period of history?" Thomas looked a bit bewildered at the bizarre twist the conversation was taking but answered without really having to think about it. "The dinosaurs," he said. The Professor let out a huge groan and Rebecca beamed with delight at the answer. "Dinosaurs? Oh very good Tom, excellent choice. Right, is everybody ready?" She stared ahead for a second as if trying to see something in the distance and then stepped forward, pulling the children with her. The three of them disappeared... Thomas and Emily Fletcher are quite normal children; normal in that their uncle mysteriously disappeared and now a medieval knight is trying to kill them. The only way to find out why somebody wants them dead would be to go back in time and ask their uncle, and the only people that can help are the teachers at the Tempus Viator School of Excellence. So it's very lucky that their new friends are time travellers...

The Political Economy of Modern Britain provides an original discussion of Britain's relative economic decline since World War Two and offers approaches to overcome this poor economic performance. Detailed and comprehensive, this book has three basic objectives. First, it describes the key political and economic decisions or events which have shaped Britain's economic performance in the post-war period. Secondly, the authors critically discuss the range of explanations which have been offered by those seeking to understand Britain's relative economic decline. Finally, it offers an alternative approach to improving Britain's economic performance known as 'the strategic alignment of national and corporate competitiveness'. In this approach the authors attempt to escape from the traditional left-right debate concerning the degree to which the state should replace the market in owning and controlling key sectors of the economy, and instead they focus on the state as a facilitator in the provision of assets required by firms competing in the international arena. This book will be welcomed by government and management striving to improve corporate and national competitiveness. Additionally academics and students interested in the fields of British politics, British political economy, British economic and social history, international political economy and European political economy will also find this a highly valuable source of information.
