This volume, the third of three in this series alone, about St. Ives which 'Q' termed Ardevora relates the tale of Ia, named after the Patron Saint of St. Ives. With clear echoes of George Eliot and references to J. M. Barrie, medieval ballads and Biblical references, Ia relates the story of the love between two people of very different stations in life. Ia contains a tale, with lightly disguised historical references to real events in Cornwall but which is also very positive towards women who rise above their circumstances. Now surpassed in fame as a writer by his daughter's bestfriend, Daphne du Maurier, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch wasthe pre-eminent Cornish writer of Victorian & Edwardiantimes and founder of the Cambridge University school ofEnglish Literature. He is of particular interest since his fiction was very often based on factual events long passed from memory.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. The book plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Viscomte Anne de Keroual de St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier enlisted as a private under the name Champdivers, after his capture by the British. The book is available on Project Gutenberg in both its incomplete and complete form (for the story as completed by Arthur Quiller-Couch look for "The Works of Robert Louis Stevenson volume twenty."). The 1949 film The Secret of St. Ives and the 1998 film St. Ives, also known as All For Love, were based on the novel. A television mini-series based on the novel was broadcast on the BBC in 1955. For the movie the character may have been changed to a Captain, and his first name changed to Jacque, as there seems to be confusion on these points........ M. Barrie, and G. K. Chesterton, who said of him that he "seemed to pick the right word up on the point of his pen, like a man playing spillikins."...
